Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4 sells One million in Japan

PS3 was way more expensive and Wii U didn't have nowhere near the amount of third party support. I don't recall there being an influx of games on their first year that would put it leagues above PS4. PS4 is just performing under expectations

What are those expectations? What are the influx of Japanese-only/PS4-only games?

People believed that PS4 would take the Japanese market by storm but it only did below average. I'm worried it won't even reach 10 million in the 8 years it took for PS3

Look at the release dates and you'll have your answer. The PS3 was released in November. November and December is where the PS3 really sold. The PS4 was released in February. That's why it didn't sell "as fast" as the PS3 did.

VGChartz PS3 Sales in Japan

These two [very important] months account for almost 500,000 consoles sold.

Yeah PS3 launched in the holiday season, but its high price deterred many from buying one in its early years

It doesn't matter. You're comparing holiday sales to non-holiday sales. November and December are always the best selling months. The PS3's launch month (November) sold 165,996 consoles in Japan. The PS4's launch month (February) sold 378,509 consoles in Japan, and that wasn't even during the holidays where people are more likely to buy a PS4 as a gift.

I don't recall anyone saying it would do anything astronomical. In fact, people had (and have) accepted the declining home console appeal, there. That's not a PS4 problem, but a regional one.

Lets look at the other side of htings - it isn't that far behind the PS3, in the same time frame, and it didn't release at the strongest period (also unlike the previous PlayStation), yet it managed 1 million in under 365 days. That's hardly, "below average". Plus, since I don't see a list of strong software, that 1 million, with very little to offer the region, in under a year, offers a sign of good things to come.

PS4 had the 3rd biggest launch in the region but then its weekly sales plummeted to really low levels.

Since the dedicated hardware market is on the decline in Japan, it makes PS4 reaching 10 million that much more unobtainable.

How many good games have been released on the PS4? It isn't the console's fault that there aren't amazing games coming out. You can't expect people to keep buying a console if they don't have games that they want to play. Wait until Final Fantasy XV comes out, or when a new JRPG comes out, and see if sales increase.

In the non-holiday season the more expensive PS3 was able to sell at a higher rate than PS4. That is an incredible feat.

How many good games for the Wii U and PS3 were released in same time period? People didn't have as much an issue buying those consoles when they were also going through a drought with Japanese centric games. Of course FFXV will increase sales. A Dragon Quest themed PS4 was enough to show the console has life in the region.

The only console that in a year have sold less than 1m...

But yeah better than Nothing...

Wrong on two counts. Xbox, and it hasn't been a year yet.

It's a steady performance but if Sony wants home consoles to be a thing in Japan they will need to do better. 2015 will probably be the year we know the extent of the diminished console market there.

Which has already been pointed out to you - unlike the PS3, it didn't release during a holiday period. That can't be ignored. Despite all of that, it hasn't fallen too far behind it. Can't make any realistic judgment calls without seeing what it will do with the proper software, anyway. So, the talk of, "reaching 10 million" is pointless.

It reaching under 10 million isn't pointless its realistic. 3DS despite being the top selling platform with the highest selling games in the region is falling below its predecessor. It's not unreasonable to assume that PS4 will be in the same boat after all its AAA games get released.
