Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Iwata: “Wii U Is Not Over Yet”

The market for that is fairly small.

Even in airports, I travel a lot for work, I see virtually no dedicated handhelds anywhere, even with kids it's all tablets/phones they're playing games on.

The truth is I think no one really 'needs' to play a hardcore game on the road. If they want to play a really deep game, that's what the home console and 50 inch screen is for.

Portable gaming is just something to eat up a few portions of downtime, but I will say though people seem to get addicted to smart device games too, I know a couple of girls hooked on Candy Crush, even on an airplane, they'd rather play Candy Crush than Mario 3D Land or something.

In the past you had to buy a dedicated handheld if you wanted to play on the road at all, but that isn't obviously the case anymore.

Well, I see enough handhelds left. Clearly the 3DS finds it market. The thing with mobile gaming it's mostly a chain of rapidfire succeces like Candy Crush Saga, but those eventually fade away (has been ages since I saw someone Canfdy Crushing). In Japan, a large group of commutors in the metro's use smartphones, but a significant amount of people and kids also use 3DS' there. IAP games are already starting to oversaturate the Playstore and cannibalize their own market. In 2 years time, the mobile gaming expential growth will have seized and will have setlled.

I don't expect him to say anything different, but I'll still say that the next console will release in 2017.

So that's the issue with the wiiu, the guy at the top is to blind and arrogant to see what the issue is and do something about it. Their own titles wont do the trick, they need 3rd party games.

I wouldn't take it too seriously. Nintendo said the same thing about the DS a year before replacing it with the 3DS.

The Wii U still has 2015 and even if they launch a Fusion console variant in say fall 2016 ... that means it still has basically 1/3 of its primary lifecycle left, so technically what he's saying isn't incorrect. Wii U still has a good chunk of its lifecycle ahead of it even if Nintendo moves to launch a handheld/home multi-platform in fall 2016.

We shall have to wait and see.

The thing is mobile gaming isn't dependant on Candy Crush, Candy Crush is just what's hot now, next year it will be something else.

Sounds like you live in Japan, I would expect to see more dedicated handhelds there. In North America and Europe where I travel a lot, in airports especially I see maybe 1 DS/3DS/Vita for every 10-15 people playing on a phone or tablet. It's really becoming lopsided.

I live in Belgium, but I went on vacation to Japan for 3 weeks. I live in Belgium. And while smartphone gaming is kind of big, all of my friends who respect themselves as gamers have a 3DS (those that have Vita's, got a 3DS or traded their Vita for a 2DS).

Would be awesome if NIntendo just kept WiiU going out of spite

Who would they be spiting? Themselves? I'm sure Sony and MS would love it if Nintendo stuck with the Wii U until 2025.

Once again a Nintendo console will struggle to reach the finish line of the average 5 year console cycle. What they're going to do to keep the Wii U afloat in 2016-17 I have no idea. I'm sure they'll be a 3D Mario title in '16, but what else besides that?

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.
