Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo and Third Party... Who is really to blame?

It is us, the gamers.

Why don't Wii U owners purchase more third party games for the system?

We missed out on COD and AC last year bc their is no support on the system.  Games like Arkham City should be near a million, it's a damn masterpiece.

When there are people campaigning (which I've seen on this site) to not purchase third party games (like Watch Dogs) it will only make 3rd parties want to develop for Nintendo even less.

I didn't mind waiting, I picked up Watch Dogs, I also have over 20 third party titles.

If you are a fan of Nintendo, then you would want them to succeed no?  They need third party support to succeed long term. Lets do our part and buy some great third party games!

The closest third party game to passing a million on Wii U is Lego City Undercover, and its taking 2 years for it to do that. Its hard to fault third parties when some of Nintendo's own major franchises like Donkey Kong Country and Wii Fit have hard time passing a million on the console. Overall Wii U software sales are far below GameCube software sales.

This isn't going to end well. As for lack of third party support on Wii U and it being gamer's fault, it's like a circle:

Third parties don't put much effort into porting games because of poor sales -> Wii U owners don't buy them because they don't want to support poorly ported games -> third parties see poor games sales and then repeat the cycle until third parties quit altogether.

Well, the issue is the most wiiU ports of third party games are usually gimped in some way. Either there is a performance issue or its missing content or it they won't release the DLC for it or its very delayed but if you own any other console/PC, you will get the "full" version of the game. And come on, we all need money to live and continue with our daily lives so if version a) offers a gimped version with missing content/DLC where as version b) offers the full experience and they both cost the same price, who wouldn't go for b)?

Yes, I want to support Nintendo and third party games on Nintendo platform but if its at the cost of buying a gimped version for the same price as the full version. No thanks. Specially since you will be sending a message that the gimped version is all they need in order to please Nintendo gamers

It's not my job to do anything. I'm a consumer. They aren't gods, they're servants. Their role is to provide a product that I want to buy, and my role is to purchase the products I want to buy. If I don't want a 3rd party game, it isn't my job to buy it, it's their job to sell it to me.

Are you fucking serious? I thought we were past this... Blaming the consumers for Nintendo current situation is total bullshit. Gamers aren't obligated to buy anything they don't want. Nintendo needed this reality check.

The thing that i've noticed is that a lot of people always say stuff like "Well it's a gimped version or a late port", but even when the game comes out at the same time and is a good/best version they still haven't sold all that well.

I mean, what happened to Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Injustice: Gods Among us, etc?

Those came out at the same time as the other versions and were good ones as well.

It's sad because the people who genuinely do like buying third party games on Nintendo consoles I feel like are held back because the fact that most others won't, meaning they probably won't get the sequel.

Nintendo fanbase likes excusivity. So xeno x will perform well, bayo 2 did great for the current userbase nintendo has.

3rd party developers just need to realize that their titles have a good chanche of doing well on wii u, make a profit, and not as expensive to make as games are on ps4/xbox one.

Just like many medium budget games made lots of profit on wii no more heroes and other games come to mind.

So 3rd party devs need to trust nintendo and its userbase more, and a nintendo console is the place to take a chance on a new franchise or creative ideas. Preferable exclusive to the console, and it usually goes well

I never said obliged. But if you want Ninty to succeed they need third parties. If third party games sell like shit why would they bother making them for it?

This. I dont expect Nintendo to change. They have an aproach to gaming that western companies dont understand. Nintendo focus on creating great products that will delight the consumer, western companies focus on profitability and ignore long time nefarious effects. In essence those 2 doctrines clash and its difficult to find common ground.

The fault never lies and never will lie with the customer. That is a pov that is beeing supplied to you through company incompetence and propaganda. Products are created to fulfill consumer needs. If the product didnt sell, its the companies fault. That is the basic comcept of marketing and they have failed at a primal level. That is what happens when your focus is only profitability. You think that when you do things wrong, its the customers fault, wich is laughable. Such companies will meet their doom soon enough if they dont change their ways.

For example the annualisation of CoD and AC. Its great for them atm, but after some years the series will die off completely. How will ubi and activision mantain profits then? Its not a sustainable tactic. Its a highly risky one too. You need to spread the risk across several IP's. Bandai Namco does that really well, for example, and its a company i like. They make alot of games, most arent huge sellers, but together they make for pretty good profits with low risk. If one game flops, they have 3 more that will do well. If AC and CoD flop, drama will ensue on their companies.
