So, after playing a whole lot of Resident Evil REmake (which released in HD a few days ago) I decided to go back to other Resident Evil games. Playing through RE2, 4, 5, 6 and Revelations again.

Just by the time I hit Resident Evil 5, I really noticed something. I've expressed my love for this game before, especially when it is my favourite Resident Evil game by far, but then, there's something else about it. This game is full of content, and when I mean full, I really mean it.

Just a disclaimer: I happen to own the Gold edition, which I understand it included a lot of things that weren't on the vanilla game, but that will be the version I will be judging the following:

+ The game itself is long. Not long as in an RPG, but fairly long for an action-horror TPS. Game can still be beaten under three hours, like most Resident Evil games, though.

+ It never drags. It's constantly throwing different situations at the player so he doesn't really get bored at all; while at times things might be a chore (like that underground puzzle, for example, which a lot of people didn't like) the overall thing is great.

+ Story is cheesy but in a good way. Cutscenes are extremely Capcom-ish, though, so expect a lot of cheese.

+ The gunplay is great, the action is ferocious. Things can get tense, and pump up the adrenaline.

- Friendly AI can get into the way, at times. Especially at the worst times, where the AI would prefer going to pick some money than saving your dying life.

+ Gives the choice to play through the lengthy campaign in solo, or co-op. Co-op experience, whether online or splitscreen, is pretty well done, and offers one of the best co-op experiences of the seventh gen.

+ Variety of locations.

+ Variety of enemies.

+ Variety of weapons, all customizable.

+ Graphically-wise, this game does shine; especially on the lightning department. Facial animation could use some work, though.

- Boss battles are very traditional and they don't pose much threat or challenge at all. Especially not when they also give you tons of resources and generally point you what to do and when.

+ QTEs (Because people like 'em)

- QTEs (Because people dislike 'em)

- OST isn't really that memorable. It has good moments, but it tends to get overshadowed, really.

+ The Mercenaries is an addictive mode, that can crank up a lot of hours of playtime, and it can also be played on Co-op.

+ If you've done absolutely everything in The Mercenaries, then you can do The Mercenaries Reunion, which mixes things a lot, and also offer you new people to play with, like classic RE icon Barry Burton.

+ DLC is awesome, such as:

+ Lost in Nightmares is a throwback to old-school RE mixed with RE5's gameplay, and while short, it's a lot of fun to play.

+ Desperate Escape is a lot of fun to play too...

- ...but it's even shorter than Lost in Nightmares and its arcade-ish mode is very poor.

+ Collecting figurines, and other things.

+ If you really want a competitive multiplayer mode, there's Versus for you, which is actually functional and playable (and still has some community in it)

+ Customizable characters, infinte ammo and some other things.

+ Also happens to be Capcom's best selling game.

^ How many games offer such insane amount of content?

So, what do you guys think about? Is it one of the most accomplished games ever?

Gears of war 3 is has massive content as well. I liked resident evil 5 but for one thing, it wasn't resident evil.

old skool

Playing through RE5 on Veteran(IIRC) with a competent co-op partner is a damn fun experience.

I used to really dislike the game, but it grew on me. I like it more than RE4.

I can understand initial dislikeness, especially for how different it is at a first glance from previous Resident Evil games. But I don't see what's not there to love after you give it a chance; especially when it has some of that old-school Resident Evil spirit in it combined with modern action games. (Inventory management issues, for example. Chris knows a lot about that!)

I liked the game a lot but it didn't feel like a Resident Evil game. As a Resident Evil it isn't very good, but as a game it's awesome.

Also it has the most epic dialogue in a video game ever... "Complete... Global... Saturation" *evilgasm*

Nice points, Wright. RE5 is quite an undervalued game and while I wouldn't rank it amongst the "most accomplished games ever", I'd probably say it deserves more praise than it currently gets.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

There are people that like QTEs?

I haven't played RE5 but will buy it as soon as they take off the GfWL requirement.
