What's a hardcore gamer and what's a mature game?

You're mature if you pla... 40 67.80%

You're mature if you pla... 7 11.86%

You're mature if you pla... 11 18.64%

Well I will go ahead and tell you an M rating doesn't make a game mature. ESRB ratings rate appropriateness. Just like a mature movie can be rated PG or PG13 rather than R, a mature game can be rated T or even E. In fact, there are a number of games and movies with M and R ratings that are very immature.

The terms hardcore gamer and mature gamer are a joke. Thats all you need to know.

If you're not talking about "mature" in the ESRB sense (and thus i assume the general "not appropriate for kid" definition), then i don't think DR3 is a particularly good example :p In this context, having blood and violence no more makes something "mature" than a lack of it makes a game childish. DR3 uses both as a counter point to its own childishness, which adds a lot to the humor.

As for hardcore, the word itself usually just refers to the most active or committed members of a group, but there's no universal definition among gamers. Most people apply a lot of conditions to what can and can't justify its use, which is fine, but it results in the term being rather open ended. I personally follow the traditional meaning. If you game frequently and are committed to it as a hobby (not just a way to kill some time), then you're "hardcore" in my eyes.

Hardcore Gamer: Similar to the modern usage of the word "nerd", a hardcore gamer is someone who surrounds themselves in games. They love playing games, they love exploring all the different weird games that are out there, they love talking about games and they love reading about games. They just all around love games.

Mature Games: A mature game is a game that goes beyond being fun and requires something more than blind mesmerism to enjoy fully. Now, this isn't really an inherent quality of a game, it is something that the player bestows onto the game so it isn't really a useful definition. What is thought provoking for one person may be banal for another, so whos to say if a game is or isn't mature?

Those are my personal definitions and both of these terms are not binary, they are more of a sliding scale.

I still find this definition most accurate:

Hardcore arranges their schedules around their gaming.
Mid-core arranges their gaming around their daily schedule.
Casual entertains self with games when time presents itself.

As for mature games, I strictly see that as a ESRB/PEGI rating - something I wouldn't give my little kids to play.

What mature means and what ratings makes mature means are completely different.

In ratings all mature means is they feel it has too much swearing/nudity/violence for anyone under the age of 18. That is it.

The game could be an entire game about trying to shit onto an old grandmas face without getting caught. And we can all agree that, that is not a mature game, it is very immature. But it woudl be rate mature.

hardcore gamer? That's simple. It anyone who plays games alot. It's a dumb title, hardcore. Casual is a good title, its for those that play casually. How does one play hardcore? Do tehy try harder? Do they scream more? Do they throw controllers? Those actions sound hardcore to me. I like the term Core. Leave out the word hard. Feels like an unneeded add on to make a self-conscous person feel cooler or something.

"Hardcore" or "core" gamers are people who put a lot of hours into gaming compared to other gamers. I see no point in dressing it up as something noble. Mature games is based the ESRB ratings. You shouldn't feel the need to justify why you like a game based on it's rating or if it makes you a hardcore gamer. Just play what you want.

Ugh, I wouldn't want to be hardcore in that definition. That sounds like you're being controlled by videogames.

Both mean nothing.

I guess I am a casual gamer then...
