Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is mobile gaming no longer a threat to console gaming?

Pretty much what Jack Tretton said, the console gamers dont migrate from console, they just use their phones as a fix for that few mins of bedtime boredom. This was a threat, but with strong new gen sales, is it proof that console gamers towards end of ps3/360 lifecycle only abandonded console (seemingly) because they were getting bored of their 6 year old hardware?

If anything, I think it's moving in the opposite direction now. Mobile games are moving mobile gamers towards the consoles moreso than ever before

When you're taking a poo, sitting in a doctors office or the girl that never played consoles anyway, it is a threat, however any other time, no.

I don't see how mobile could be a threat home console gaming. I understand the competition with handheld, but not home consoles.

Mobile games have their uses and those uses are here to stay. Like others said, on the toilet, lying in bed or whatever is great for 5 minutes of Bejewled Blitz, Rayman Jungle Run, Beach Buggy etc etc. But thats as far as it goes.

PREDICTIONS FOR END OF 2015: (Made Jan 1st 2015)

PS4 - 34M - XB1 - 21m - WII U -12M

It was never a threat

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

Around the Network

Yes it's a threat, look :
Home consoles/handheld
6th gen : GC 22m+XB 25m+PS2 158m=205m / GBA 82m
7th gen : Wii 101m+X360 85m+PS3 85m=271m / DS 155m+PSP 81m=236m
So during this period there are more and more gamers but with the development of the smartphones, tablets etc.. a part of the gamers leaves their consoles and the sales decrease:
8th gen predictions : Wii U 25m+Xone 50m+PS4 100m=175m / 3DS 80m+PS Vita 20m=100m

It is not a threat for the PS4 or Xbox One because those 2 consoles primarily target the 13-34 year old male demographic. PS4 and Xbox One are going for the PS3/360 crowd to the max. Not even trying anything else. Smartphone gamers are more diverse, and they threatened the Wii/Kinect/3DS type crowd instead.

I doubt it is but it is hard to predict the future. I mean, the way that somethings seem to be headed is that you can play great games on virtually any device via streaming so it depends on how much they get invested into that. But for now, it isn't a threat

I don't think it will ever be a threat until buttons are standard on smart phones.

How does mobile gaming relate to console gaming? They seem like quite the different thing. One way I can see it being a threat to console games is if all the 3rd parties move to mobile games instead of console games, but that will probably not happen, aside from a couple of once loved companies and games.
