I do not have much experience but I find the rules a little ambiguous, leaving much to the interpretation of the moderator. Finally the rules

It will always be this way. There isn't a single all-encompassing solution.

Fear not:

Thread Creation. Thread titles and content must be descriptive and on topic. Contentless threads and those who break the following rules can and will be locked.

Looks like we might have to remove that quote tree rule before it's even used...

This is a good thing.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

But... won't that put you out of work? How will you feed your dog without that quote tree ban commission?

I will definitely be going hungry, and RealGamingExpert will have noone to point to as the Quote Tree Mod.

Sad times indeed.

(From Rule 14: Requested Bans *New*)

  • For any reason, a user may ask a moderator to ban them for a specific period of time. This ban will not stack against you if you are moderated for rule-breaking in the future. If you would like to return to the website before the deadline, contact a mod by way of an alternate account (See Rule 18). With all that said, we will not grant you a permanent ban.

Soooo If you want a perm; just don't log in?

What a crazy notion.

I agree with this. Often times I see blantantly ignorant or offensive posts about the above mentioned group, and I routinely mark them for moderation. Unfortunately, I have yet to see any action taken against those posts. It's either because of the mods own ignorance about the topic (in which case we need a more diverse group of moderators) or their own preexisting bias. Either way I hope the mod team finds a way to stay fair to all kinds of groups.

Please don't assume that the mod team is ignorant or prejudiced when it comes to any ethnic, religious, or cultural community. This is a very well-educated, wordly, empathetic group of moderators which takes discrimination very seriously. I promise you that.

On a personal note, I studied Middle Eastern history for four years on an undergraduate level and two years on a graduate level. I also spent a year living and working in Baghdad.

We tell our mods again and get to "GET ON MODCHAT!" (you can ask them ). The more moderators there are to discuss a potentially moderatable post, the better decision we make. Every permaban needs the consensus of the team in order to go through. And since we have a diverse cast of characters, we can get multiple opinions and views that helps sway one way or another on highly contested issues (like, for example, the hate speech rule which we've been talking about).

I'm actually working right now on updating the Mod Guidelines page (hasn't been done so since the Machina days). Gives every mod the ability to have a refrence point on what to do in situations and how to best work as a team.
