Achievements, should they stay or go?

Yes 31 29.25%

No 13 12.26%

Only Sony/Micro should keep them 8 7.55%

Nintendo should consider getting them 53 50.00%

Total:105

Its optional and can be disable/hidden, it doesnt hurt anyone and yes I really like them.

I find that when I'm trying to get all collectables (*#@%ing OCD) the whole game opens up to be and I find myself exploring places I never even knew existed, I can't game without them!. It sounds petty but I can't enjoy games without them and I cant keep playing a game if I have all the achievements.

That's achieved with puzzle pieces in DKC: TF. Or green stars in Super Mario 3D World. Or side quests in Zelda games. If a game needs to resort to trophies for you to achieve that feeling than it obviously failed.

How are any of them generic. I'll barely give you Sony since they just changed achievements into trophies. But ms is the one who created the idea of having them across the board so it can't be generic. I agree it can be improved but not generic. Heck even Sony's isn't when I think about it. I love their leveling idea. I just don't like how my achievements (for lack of a better word) on a Sony console would be split into gold trophy, platinum, silver and bronze (I know they're not in order).

>Beat Level 1 (2,3,4,5,6,7,8....)

...Okay, well this achievement is just pointless

>Find the Riddler Trophies

...Fuck you game

>Go the every quest in the game going the Good Route

Okay, now I feel like the achievements are trying to manipulate how I play

>Kill 100 Enemies of a certain type

So now the game is asking me to grind for no reward...why?

>Secret Achievement

Why do these even exist?

Why not just integrate achievements into the game and cut out all of the bullshit? Overall, they often feel like a skinner box and I don't like when games try to do that to me. I have yet to see an achievement that made me think about a game in a different way or push me to do something new. Are they capable of it? Maybe, although I do think that integration into the game is an infinitely better way of doing things, but Achievements as they stand are copy/paste, generic, tacked on...whatever you want to call them.

I'm glad at least someone sees it in my way.

Thanks Samus. I disagree with everything you said but you made me think about how achievements could effect gaming habits for better or worse (mostly better) even if you generally don't care about them.

I want to make a thread with a more incluse take now but I don't want to be redundant.

.- -... -.-. -..

I am not so much a fan of achievements myself. It may be a reason why I stopped playing games on my PS3. I have a bad habit of needing to complete games, so having trophies doesn`t help. Thinking about trophies in a game kind of stops me from playing. It also keeps me away from games I am only mildly interested in. So I am sort of on the side of not having them.

Plus, achievements take up memory space. Not a lot at first but once you get a ton, they add up.

Anyway, I love trophies/achievements.  They've definitely kept me interested in some games long after the story has ended.
