Forums - PC Discussion - MMOs and Pointless Quests

My biggest issue with MMOs is that you depend on other people to complete stuff. It's a characteristic of the genre sure, but I personally hate that.

Which is sad, because I played a little bit of FFXIV ARR and it's a fine game. Oh well.

I recently started playing Dragon Age. I noticed that the "requisition table" items are neverending, but not necessary. So far they haven't made me go on quests for no reason. Most of their quests state why you're going on it, and those reasons seem solid (e.g. Rescue missing soldiers; get horses for the army; etc). I just got to Skyhold, so maybe I'm not far enough to see the "filler" quests. But if the quests are optional, that's fine. I just don't like it when they make it part of your storyline.

The requisition table I think was there to let the player make mini decisions that don't affect the story a whole lot but I didn't much care for the  back and forth walking in (the place you put in black bars). Made it feel unnecessarily more MMOish.

Im just nitpicking at this point though.

Edit: I actually liked the idea of a singplayer MMO like game. But after leaving the game for a while 20 more hours feels like too much, espially after cracking it's secret like I mentioned on my first post.

Quest design is one of my favorite Extra Credits series and I really do think its worth watching for anyone who likes to think about video games:

Reminds of the Runecape when I had to do a quest called Roving Elves and had to do about 7 long prerequisite quests just to get a fucking bow which I ended up never using. T^T

This is a perfect example of pointless, lol.

Just looked information on that quest and I have to vehemently disagree. You are just looking at things the wrong way. If you look at quests as dispensers of loot, than obviously you will run into issues. However, this quest in particular seems to do everything right. It gives you something different and out of the ordinary to do, it presents you with consequences of your past actions, it sheds more light on characters and places in the game, etc.

The problem is that quests are seen as a means to an end, instead of being seen as an interesting part of the game. I'd say the fault here is solely in both of your ways of thinking...

I have not played this game myself. I assumed that the post by Mystro-Sama was saying that the only purpose for this quest was loot, and that it was loot that was less powerful than what he/she already had. If there was a reason for it built into the storyline, that's fine. Based solely on what Mystro-Sama said it did seem pointless.

Yeah, the quests in mmo's can get kinda silly or just plain stupid. I kinda expect that though from them. Honestly, I'm not a mmo player. I've tried some but I get tired of the time requirements to stay on top of everything. I also don't like the mandatory teamwork for raids to get the best gear. I rather just solo most of the time, team up with people once in a while and grind by myself for as much as I want.
