Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Can WiiU posible have a "XBMC" app ?

It's not hard to see.. that the Upad could be a nice way of controlling Movies and Music from HD.. And that the "offtv" function could be useful for some families.

Why is this not happen yet.. why is it not included in Nintendo Tvii.. or Nintendo make a "dedicated offline player"

Can it make piracy more easy ?

Can the hardware do it (Run MKV. MP4. MP3. FLAG. AVI in up to 1080p) ?

Any rights/codec that make it imposible.. or not woth it for Nintendo ?

Or 3 Party ?

Do Nintendo have other reasons ?

What holding them back.. Please share if you know.

Doesn't the wii u already have something like that already?

I am guessing its licensing fees and lazyness. Mostly lazyness cause even on the wii days, you couldn't play DVDs on it by default until you hacked it which was nonsense

I also think it has some to do with licensing fees.. but so i think on all the free players for windows.. so i would like to know this works.

(I think they would "spare" the drive with wii)

It should technically be possible, but there are licensing issues.

I'm sometimes using Plex to stream from PC to Wii U (in the browser).

It natively supports h264 ("Direct Play") because I can stream 1080p MP4 files without stressing the Plex application on PC. The CPU usage goes to 2-3% with some files that use an audio codec that the Wii U doesn't support natively (like DTS).

I can also stream 4K files, but is stresses the PC CPU by 30-40% because it has to convert it to 1080p.

I always thought they should team up with the VLC team to bring a VLC app to the Wii U. A simple offline media player that can play almost everything. It certainly could do it. I have a old junk PC that can run VLC.

Didn't know Plex.. and nice info.. (did knew about streaming and also did it with mp4 on wii)

And yes Bunchanumbers.. If Nintendo can't or wanna.. I would love VLC did it (offcourse expecten them to include upad.. (but i think they would.. can't be that long before all smart tv has "screen remotes" and they could use the codes and knowhow later)

And if VLC or other 3 part did it.. would it cost them more than the software.. ?

(Do theese media player "makers" pay every time they comes onto a new platform)

VLC is a free open source media player. I think the biggest hurdle would be Nintendo adding it to the app list. I wouldn't even mind if I had to pay 99 cents for it. The team certainly earned it.

Yes thats right.. And I don't even think they could charge anything.

It would be a pretty nice update..:)

Think it could happen.. if Nintendo wants.

And if there was easy donating.. I also think many would use that. (if the upad intergration was good and it worked well)

I don't know why an open source media player isn't on the eShop... Maybe legal issues.

It would get one very quickly if it was hacked, probably even with USB, DVD and Blu-ray playback.
