Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft Finally Reveals the Fate of Xbox’s Super Cool IllumiRoom

Remember IllumiRoom?  The technology shown by Microsoft Research that used Kinect to “extend” the screen of Xbox games beyond the TV and into the rest of the room back in 2013?

Finally, we get to know what happened with it, thanks to Xbox Live Operations Manager Eric Neustadter, who gave an explanation on Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb’s latest Google Hangout.

We said when IllumiRoom came out, it was a tech demo. It was never announced as a product, or something you’d be able to buy. People got really excited about it, because it was really cool, but it was just a… “hey, let’s see if we can do this and figure out what to do with it.”

There are a lot of smart people running around Microsoft to invent a lot of really cool things that don’t immediately become products.

Below you can see the video showcasing the tech, coming back from 2013’s limbo.

Why show something off if the intention is to not release it?

They should have made it into something could have been cool.

We could get hololens now though. Although it would be pretty expensive.

I'm not surprised. When I first saw it my immediate thought was this doesn’t look commercially viable in the near-term future, but will probably release in some shape or form in a few years’ time.

I guess they were showing off whats possible. Same with milo. However holo lens has the potential to do the same thing but better. This would have been too costly and would have taken a lot of set-up. not very consumer friendly

So where does holo lens stand on the scale between tech demo and product.
I thought Illumiroom became room alive, and it seems hololens is the continuation of that without the need for multiple projectors.
