Forums - Gaming Discussion - Would you buy a game digitally if...

Dying Light's troubles got me into opening this thread and ask the question.....

In case you didn't know, Dying Light has had some strange disc production problems, causing the physical disc to be postponed in PAL regions for a whole month (February 27 instead of January 27). Game will be available digitally as scheduled, and on disc in the Americas.

Now, this certainly is not good for WB (the publisher) as they will miss a perfect launch window with no major releases to compete with, thus losing revenue and marketing exposure (being #1 on sales charts brings some nice free publicity). However, it will probably entice some gamers that would have bought the disc to purchase the game digitally, to play it during this slow period, as the end of February already gets busier (not much busier, but PS4 gets The Order which will definitely eat into DL's sales).

My question is mainly directed at people who prefer physical discs, as I noticed many shy away from buying games digitally. Of course, all gamers are encouraged to participate.

Getting to the question ---- Would you be more enticed to buy a game digitally if:

a) It became a common practice to release the digital game earlier (a week or two earlier). Dying Light did this accidentally, but Sony released Infamous: Firts Light on disc two weeks after the digital release on purpose. Similar will be done with Resident Evil Revelations 2, while we already have it commonly done by Telltale with The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us.

b) The game is cheaper digitally (10-15%) -  I have read some comments where people would be willing to go digital for a discount.

c) Digital copy included some cosmetic DLCs that the physical disc would not (character skins, wardrobe, vanity items etc) - So nothing that would give gamers advantage over one another, but still something that a portion of gamers spends money on.

Or any combination of a), b) and/or c).

Personally, I already buy everything digitally, but I think that either or all of these would sway some gamers.

Yeah, at least for games I'm really anticipating. I don't think I would wait for two weeks to play Persona 5 just to get it on a disc. If digital copies were substantially discounted, I could see myself moving to digital entirely.

Being cheaper is definitely enticing. I generally only buy digitally when the games are on sale for $5-10 on XBL. Most games I tend to buy physically day one or, if I can wait, on sale for roughly half price.

Digital is like 20% cheaper so pretty much always buy digital now. ( USA PSN store is a bargain for a European :P )

Never. I will always get physical version. I see digital games as long term rental; especially in consoles.

a) No, I don't care if i have to wait.

b) 10-15% wouldn't do it. I only resorted to digital in cases where the games was only 1/3 or less of the retail price and when I didn't wanted a lot it anyway.

c) No, it wouldn't get my interest.

I prefer discs for consoles, since they give me more freedom with the game.

But if this were the case for a game I was looking forward to, I would probably just get it digitally.

Price and convinience are why I still choose physical over digital

I'll always prefer getting physical version over digital, even if I have to wait a bit longer to play (ie. Resident Evil Revalations 2)

I would never purchase anything digital unless it was the only option. (ie upcoming Yakuza 5)

I'd buy digital if they were MORE than 10-15% cheaper, I'd want at least a 20-25% discount on my games, and I mean a 20-25% discount from the PHYSICAL price... since digital game prices on PSN are fucking ridiculous... £50-60 for a game that I can buy brand new day one for £35-40 physically? No thank you...

Well, I agree. My 10-15% was just an example.

Also, the problem is somewhat EU specific. US PSN and retail prices are always $60, while in EU both prices vary significantly, with €10-20 variations between games without any logic.

I forgot to add that I buy all digitally because I purchase from the US account, making all my digital games around €50, or about €10-20 less than I can find a retail disc.  Sadly, US Dollar started rising, the games are already some €8 more expensive than I paid 12 months ago.
