Forums - Gaming Discussion - Are console makers deliberately caping speeds? (US)

Has anyone else in the US noticed that on video game consoles, there seems to be a cap or at the very least, some sort of throttling going on? I recently upgraded my shitty internet (6 down .4 up) to something more respectful (60 down 5 up) and after timing the downloads, found out that it's not even CLOSE to that speed. When I ran a speed check on the PS4, it says 25 down and 2.5 up and that's the fastest I've seen. I've even personally clocked downloads on Wii-U, Xbox 360 and PS4 and none of them go over that speed. The Wii-U was something around 12mbps.

Now, I know it isn't my internet, or my router, because when I download something off Steam, or anything else on my PC, it's always right around 60mbps. I've run countless speed checks from countless different sources and it always comes back fine so it HAS to Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft doing this.

Has anyone else experienced this? What the hell is going on?

Around the Network

They're not capping speeds. Their servers just get bogged down and if you have cable, then your neighbours are bogging your connection down. If you try at a weird time like 3am, you'll probably get more than 60 mbits down even though you're only paying for 60.

I actually get pretty close. I have 50 down and 10 up and whenever I test my speeds on PS4 is usually get around 43-48 down and 6-8 up.

I was going to say no, but my connection is only 20mbps and it seems to get very good use on the PS4, honestly I am rarely aware of downloads as updates, etc. all happen in the background while the console and I are asleep...

Do you guys use wireless?

Around the Network

Consoles (read:any hardware) are rarely able to take full advantage of internet speeds. Oh and the other reasons mentioned above as well.

Wiiu has always been slow as balls downloading.

Everything else is at the mercy of network congestion.

Are your consoles connected to your router via Wi-Fi or a wired connection? Because that makes all of the difference.

I am kind of surprisd at that... doesn't matter what device I use my DL speed will only ever match the paid for "up to" speed in the middle of the night (and only if I am 2m from the router or cabled in instead of wifi, but that's a different problem).

I would blame your ISP
