i honestly feel no handheld will ever out sell its previous generation these days between tablets and smart phones and the fact that parents are buying thier kids smart phones, the market for handhelds has shrunk. i do however believe there will always be a place for them. My thinking on this is the only games i ever play on my smart phone are games that dont require twitch response and/or constant movement, i tried to play GTA3 on my phone and after about 10 minutes i was done with it i just need physical buttons to play games like that. Also i feel for most story driven games are harder to play on a phone for the fact that you dont sit and play them for hours on end on the phone.

Around the Network

It is only a failure when compared with the DS, much like the PS3 and PS4 would seem compared to the PS2... Except that the 3DS has been quite profitable for Nintendo after a rocky start.

There seems to be a decent amount of interest in the new 3DS as well (I don't know how but I WILL get my hands on one of those majoras mask ones) so it still has life in it.

Definitely not a failure. Pretty much has been keeping Nintendo in the bank for years now.

The 3DS had a rocky start that is true, but even pressure from mobile gaming couldnt prevent it from beating the Vita by a gargantuan margin.

Ya I agree, despite the rise of smartphones & tablets, there is still a market for dedicated handhelds. As long as Nintendo can find a way to make a profit off of selling 50-70 million units of hardware along with a few hundred million units of software than they will be fine in the handheld market.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

If the 3ds is a failure, what exactly does that make all the other current gen systems? Disasters?
