Today Windows forced me to upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1.  It was asking to upgrade for the last couple days and I always chose the 'later' option but today it gave me no choice.  I looked it up and there was a way to disable it by uninstalling some windows update files but I didn't bother doing that.

One reason I didn't update before was because I had everything setup the way I liked it and 'windows key + x' was good enough for me.

Anyways, some questions:

  1. Do you think Windows 10 will be a forced upgrade for 8/8.1 users?
  2. Would there be any benifits and drawbacks to MS for doing a forced upgrade to 10?
  3. What would be the benifits and drawbacks for Windows users with a forced upgrade to 10?

1) Probably not since going from 8-8.1 is an incremental update (even if it is a big incremental update) vs 8-10 is a giant update since its essentially a different OS even though they are all increments of windows 6 really

2) Some bad press maybe but it will be the minority imo

3) Not really since Windows 10 has a lot of things going for it that windows 8/8.1 just doesn't have (like the start menu) and its a major improvement from windows8/8.1 judging from the Beta. It essentially has the benefits of windows 8 (such as fastboot) without its drawbacks (like Mandatory Metro UI and lack of start Menu)

Doubt it since it's free the first year they have all the reason for you not to update and have you pay the day it becomes unavoidable because third party software stop being supported on win8.x and that should happen pretty fast...

Kinda. If they don't force it they will be very annoying about it. I didn't lose anything by upgrading to 8.1 from 8 though, and frankly Win 10 will be a nice upgrade in functionality and features from Win 8.

Don't worry, just upgrade.

1. They won't force because that would include forcing busíness customers, too. This won't happen.
This also is partially an answer for point 2 and 3. Windows 7 and Windows 8 will live on until they are not supported anymore. And even then you are free to use it. MS just drops support and you are on your own then.

I'm a Windows 7 user, so I won't have to worry about that! ^_^
