Why would a free upgrade increase the market share? If anything, it will slow down the decline...

Because as of right now Windows 10 has no market share. And Win 7 - 8.1 has about 70%. Those people are able to upgrade.

My question was not pertaining to W10, but against Linux, Mac, Android...as the OP said.

Even if all W7 and W8 users upgrade for free, Windows marketshare will still remain the same...

Well the free upgrade isn't meant for market share increase then. The features should handle that.

I'm not arguing that...

I think that their main goal is to increase tablet and phone marketshare.

Most of MS' money comes from businesses adopting the OS. People in businesses will be more likely to recommend their company adopt Win 10 if they use it and like it at home.

Its definitely making me want a Surface Pro

"The immediate revenue hit is unlikely to be large, as Microsoft gets no more than $500 million of its $20 billion or so annual Windows revenue from upgrades, analysts said. The vast majority of Windows revenue comes from hardware makers installing it on new personal computers and businesses paying for multi-year licenses." - source

Isn't it free for the first year only? You have to buy after you use your year long free trial right?

Free DURING the first year.

After first free year they will make a subscription yearly fee... And return everything...

sticking to win7, wouldnt switch if they paid me to after the piece of junk that was win8.

Will make more people familiar with it and prompt Office and other devices usage.

At one point MS was good with home piracy of os because that still was better than losing the customer and maybe had bussiness migrate as well.

Hmm isn't win10 100% free(none of that yearly crap) for us unlucky win8 users?

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)
