The thing was a failure. They went from about 75% market share to just 32%. They lost $2 billion in the first year or two of the PS3. Massive third party exclusives like MGS,GTA, and FF went to the Xbox. They failed. Hard. Sony is smart for supporting their first party studios and putting PS+ out there, because otherwise they had nothing positive come out of last generation.

Market wise? No.

Financially? Yes.

Is there no positive things? I agree that it's not as great a success that people in this thread seem to believe, but surely it made some things right?

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

It was a success for the consumers. It was not a success for Sony.

Surely a failure (and I love my ps3) as they spent so much money developing it and lost a lot of money on each sale for quite a few years. However probably not as big a failure as the 360 which had they huge write off of debt due to RROD. The only true home console winner of that generation was the wii at least commercially but for me both ps3 and 360 provided amazing gaming experiences and so both are huge winners for me personally. The wii on the other hand was hugely disappointing with only a handful of Nintendo games making it worthwhile.

I'd call it a costly mistake.

Success in terms of sales? Really? It barely made second place and it lost a lot of sales and market share PS2 had gained.

Silly me. You're right. 80M+ sales is absolutely disgraceful. You have great opinions

Yeah they lost a shit ton of money I would assume.

In terms of games though it was a success for me. It gave me my fav game of all time, TLOU.

I recently made a similar thread about XB1, and that got me thinking; this gen has just begun and we have a pretty clear picture of how last gen went down. So let's try and figure out if the PS3 was a success or a failure.

Let's take a look at a few numbers first:
X360 has sold 84.4m units
PS3 has sold 84.6m units
Wii has sold 100.9m units

Clearly PS3 didn't reach the souring heights of its predecessor, PS2, which did over 150m. But does that mean PS3 is a failure? Could it be seen at least as a moderate success? After a pretty rough start it eventually manage to catch X360 and even surpass it sales wise, but does that mean it's a success after losing a massive market share? It's also important to remember that PS3 helped push the Blu-Ray format.

Keep the discussion civil, do NOT troll or flame! This is an interesting discussion to be had, so don't ruin it!!

Well it was a major success in the last 3 year of the lifecycle. It would all depends on if they manage to recover form the massive losses inccured at the beginning of PS3 lifecycle. Mistake made on the PS3 gave you the PS4 & Playstation Now.

From a stockholder/business mans view, probably. From a gamers prospective absolutely not.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.
