Is PS3 a failure?

Yes! 146 23.74%

No! 422 68.62%

Maybe baby 27 4.39%

Gimme numbers! Arrgh omnomnom! 19 3.09%

Total:614

I recently made a similar thread about XB1, and that got me thinking; this gen has just begun and we have a pretty clear picture of how last gen went down. So let's try and figure out if the PS3 was a success or a failure.

Let's take a look at a few numbers first:
X360 has sold 84.4m units
PS3 has sold 84.6m units
Wii has sold 100.9m units

Clearly PS3 didn't reach the souring heights of its predecessor, PS2, which did over 150m. But does that mean PS3 is a failure? Could it be seen at least as a moderate success? After a pretty rough start it eventually manage to catch X360 and even surpass it sales wise, but does that mean it's a success after losing a massive market share? It's also important to remember that PS3 helped push the Blu-Ray format.

It is if people consider the 3ds a failure cause it didn't reach the heights of the DS (which some people do)

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Not a failure but it's not a major success like the PS2 either, and if Sony stand still doing nothing for it including not reducing price at a huge cost, the sales today would look similar to the N64. So yeah it was nothing mindblowing but could have been a lot worse.

...Let the Sony Domination continue with the PS4...

So, unless a console beats the PS2 and becomes the best selling console of all time, it is then a failure? That is a mighty high bar to set.

I think only Sony knows for sure.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

semi-success

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

Its a failure for sony, they lost a lot of money.
-Free online, no one would want to buy a sibcription from sony at the time the least after spending 600 bucks
- exlcusives that really utilized the cell cpu cuz third party didnt
- research and devolopement even into the cpu itself, the cell
- they offered the the fat ps3 at 600$ while it costed 900$ to produce at launch
- they had to spent alot of money into online infastructure which they didnt before while MS had one before dueto being a huge software company
- they also spent a lot of money on ps+ to make subscriptions from sony atractive
- ah yeah research and devolopement into blue ray too

The managed to be close to the 360 and now even outselling it but they burned alot of money. But yeah sony in the end didnt end up like sega, the ps3 had worse start than the sega saturn it could have been worse.

I argue that if it made Sony money it's a success. But I'm pretty sure they actually lost quite a bit for quite some time. They might very well have recouped all that lost money, and they might even have made some money on top of that. But it can't have been all that much.

Success in terms of sales? Yes
Success in terms of game sales? Yes
Success in quality which helps the PS4 today? Yes
Success in making Sony money? No

Success in terms of sales? Really? It barely made second place and it lost a lot of sales and market share PS2 had gained.
