Marketing move, they had big chanes before and they kept the name Internet Explorer... Upon release IE6 was a very nice broswer, this is why it took so much market share, until Firefox and later Chrome appeared there was a time when Netscape was not really competitive (it was really bloated back then) and IE 6 was both faster and had better standard compatibility... that was between year 2000 and 2005!

So the market share sky rocketed and everybody was happy (except web developpers who had to learn a million little "hacks" to make things work)...

Then Apple made Safari based on web kit, they released the iPhone and Firefox started to be noticed, the developpers wanted to code standard HTML and specify the look of their content using CSS, use Javascript only for behaviour, etc. basically create maintainable sites instead of the old mess they used to make (want to change the color of some text? well... it may be set somewhere in a script, in an HTML argument or another, and sometimes in CSS, sometimes in a couple of those to ensure browser compatibility).

So the rise of the iPhone, a popular mobile platform that has a standard compliant web browser on it and Firefox helped push for this, IE 7/8 came about really soon, when IE8 was released in beta form it was for a few weeks the fastest browser available, it was still less practical the the current version of Firefox or Chrome, but at least it worked with most modeern sites, IE9 tried to pass good JAvascript performance for "HTML 5", but real HTML 5 never worked in IE 9 (transitions, rounded corners, web workers, etc.).

Anyway, now a days using IE 10 or 11 is not the hindrance it was to use IE a few years back, it's still not very practical, doesn't have any nice add ons, but it works with standard HTML and its javascript performance is good... there is really no reason to be upset at them for it.

Years and years of crashing is hard to forgive. How do you think spartan will do?
