last gen was a weird gen,.. you can't compare this gen to last gen without acknowledging that ps360 peaked in their 5th-6th year on the market instead of the normal 2nd-3rd year.

xbox had a great launch that put it way ahead of the 360 but then lost ground for the course of the entire year before pulling back out ahead on the heals of the firesale. if you want to just take a snapshot of today's numbers things look fine.

...but in the context of 360 sales that seemed to defy gravity breaking the sales norm you have to wonder,.. will this gen's xbox will follow last gen's sales cycle or the sales cycle of any other gen? the answer to that is too soon to tell and massively important to deciding if xbox will be deemed successful or a failure.

I'm sure it's not xb1 and ps4 peak year too both was affected by cross-gen games

a normal sales cycle would suggest that 2015 is the peak sales year.  last gen's sales cycle would suggest 2016 and 2017 will be even bigger than 2015 which is of course bigger than 2014.

...we'll see how 2016 goes when we get there.

It's losing massive marketshare relative to the 360's gains, so MS certainly think it is. Consoles are selling faster and earlier because of today's early adopter culture, but MS are losing brutally where it counts: Percentage of the market.

What are you talking about? It is already close to the market share 360 had at the end of 7th Gen.

A lot of people seem to assume that the PS4 and XB1 are the only two systems competing for marketshare.  Fact is the PS4 is eating up the Wii's market share while the XB1 is staying rather stable compared to last gen.

As far as the actual topic goes: the system is not a failure.  It isn't the #1 system in the world, but it isn't a failure.

Not sure how ps4 is eating wii market share which games attract people who bought wii for Wii play/fit and sport

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

Initial reveal/PR was a failure

Companies care less about marketshare than About total sales and profit. Of course bigger presence and MS preffers total domination but no need to fret over it.

It's not massive at all though. In the US it has about 37.1% marketshare compared to 39.4% for the 360. Globally it has 28.6% compared to the 360's 31.3%

Yeah, it's dropped. But 2-3% is hardly a massive drop.

You're counting the Wii, which is effectively a separate market except for perhaps a few percentage points. The only thing that matters to MS, other than profitability, is marketshare versus PlayStation. Nintendo are largely a non-factor in this rivalry.

This is why we have to consider our data qualitatively in social science, lest we do misleading things like ignore the Wii to Wii U plummet.

Or misleading things such as someone claiming to know 'the only thing that matters to MS'...

In your attempt at a straw person argument, you seem to have forgotten what "misleading" actually means. There is nothing misleading about that.

But just to tie it up, yes, marketshare is their focus for platform building. Not only is this fundamental to microeconomics, but we have witnessed it in their recent  bundling, price slashing, and advertising. They've cut profitability for the sake of marketshare, since console owners buy games, accessories, and services.

NO.

I think it is harder for someone to logically say that it has under performed to expectations from 18 months ago.

It is near the end of the end....

Yes. Haven't you read the internet?

Judging from what people are saying here, it doesn't look like it ^^

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Exactly.  It's just like how developers supported the PS3 before the turnaround.  Sure more developers will focus on the Xbox 360 to build a game on, using their B team on the PS3 ports.  Sure the 360 will get cheaper exclusives.  It's the same thing but the rolls are reversed.  Though outside of the US and UK where Playstation never lost ground and Xbox is losing more ground, Playstation will gain exclusives.

Console manufacturers make most of their revenue in game, service, and accessory sales. In other words, marketshare is directly tied to overall profitability.

This is why emboldened companies even choose to be loss leaders and why MS have made such drastic price cuts and bundles in addition to increased advertising.
