on some level i agree with you, controller backwards compatibility isn't an expectation i have for consoles gen to gen.

however,.. when nintendo decided to sell an adaptor to allow gamecube contoller to work on the wiiU i think you create an expectation that gamecube controllers work on the wiiU for more than just one game. a well designed adaptor would have been interated at the system level and be usable with any game. if it has to be supported game by game than that is just lazy integration on nintendo's part.
