Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Wii U is the only console to ever baffle me

a)Im guessing it has something with them gripping onto the local multiplayer family experience. As if online would rip apart families.

I fail to see this gamepad backlash other than people saying that it should be dropped in order to make a cheap skul

b)Why would Nintendo release seperate gamepads(they did sell them for $150 at launch)?  You can get a phone with a hell of a lot more features/technology than the gamepad for $50, so the cost of it should be signifigantly lowerthan that.

Nintendo isnt going to blow money on 3rd parties unless they are getting an exclusive game out of it. Again they dont have money to loss lead with.

Personally I would also like to see Iwata and Miyamoto go, but I think Nintendo has already set its course and it cannot be set right

The backlash is from Nintendo itself, because not even they are using the gamepad for anything.

The gamepad was one of the worst ideas in the history of gaming. No hype for it whatsoever. Think of it this way - Sony has copied Nintendo's controller since the orignal PlayStation. The PS1 controller was modeled after the SNES controller. Nintendo comes out with an analog stick, Sony makes the Dual Analog. Nintendo comes out with rumble, Sony comes out with the Dual Shock. Nintendo creates the GameCube Wavebird, Sony then also goes wireless. Nintendo comes out with the Wiimote, Sony laughably tries to copy them with the Sixaxis controller and eventually the Move controller.

Sony didn't even bother acknowledging the Wii U controller. NO ONE outside of Nintendo thought it was a good idea, and now I bet Nintendo is regretting it.

Also their thoughts about online really prove my point: they have gone completely insane and they need an executive overhaul + rebranding like the PS3 did in 2009.

uninformed, hysterical list of aimless grievances is... uninformed and hysterical.

i think at this point if these sorts of posts from people who clearly don't own the console and have no stake in nintendo's success or failure were all taken together, they could be published in encyclopedia form in more than a few volumes.

amazingly, we're still getting the childish "Cell-da" complaint in 2015. yup. because progress.

concern trolling ftw.

That's the thing - I have no desire to buy a Wii U. That's not my fault. Clearly most people agree with me.

And the Cel-Da complaint is legit. Dark Souls + Nintendo's touch is what I was expecting Zelda Wii U to be, not a cartoon.

- Mario 3D World flopped

In what way?

In terms of reception. It's got GREAT reviews (93 on Metacritic, 93% on GameRankings, 5 stars on Amazon), yet it's barely talked about and didn't even get close to selling the Wii U. Why? Because it's not what fans wanted. They wanted a sequel to Super Mario 64 in HD, not a sequel to 3D Land in HD.

I have played every main console Mario ever. In fact I played Galaxy 2 again as recently as last year. Yet I have no interest in 3D World. I am not even close to being alone either.

As someone who truly thinks that 3D World is the most special Mario game ever, I say, give it a chance. Though, even then, I understand where are you coming from, so I'm not going to go against your point that much.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Oh yeah I just thought of another thing that is annoying me. Nintendo has clearly bought exclusives before. Sony and Microsoft are doing it now kind of. However, Nintendo DID do it this gen and what did they buy?

Sonic the Hedgehog. Seriously, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Street Fighter, Tomb Raider, and Titanfall were ALL on the table and Nintendo chose Sonic?!?!?!?!? Not only that but Sega barely even cared and gave us Sonic Boom.

Indeed. But, I got to tell you that Nintendo has pretty much admitted that the Wii U is a flop, though they must stick with it because otherwise it could lose its fanbase. As you can see, only Zelda seems to be the only big budget title from Nintendo for Wii U. Also, that fact you comment about, they are not getting third exclusives, practically, anymore.

Dark Souls looks ugly as hell.

hey, i'm just going to come out and say this, ok? nintendo likes cartoons. they are at their best when they do cartoons, with few exceptions (perfect dark? metroid prime? xenoblade chronicles? none of these is an ead or spd title, so only loosely are they "nintendo" games). this is the company of star fox, mario, kirby, pikachu, yoshi, donkey kong, animal crossing, pikmin, etc. etc. colorful graphics, colorful characters, etc., are nintendo's calling card. when nintendo did real-time strategy, they made up colorful vegetable creatures which fight monsters with the leaves on their heads, ok?

so you've confirmed here the suspicion i voiced above, which is that you just don't care for nintendo. with the exception of the complaint about the droughts, which is obviously well-founded, everything you say is a symptom of your not caring for nintendo.

You realize that the selling point of Dark Souls is the brutal difficulty, right? Zelda games are known for their accessibility. If you make it Dark Souls with Zelda, few people would buy it. And both Sony and Microsoft are acknowledging the Gamepad. Off-TV Play with Vita's remote play, and the second screen with Xbox Smart Glass.

Bet with Xander XT:

I can beat more games on his 3DS than he can on my PSVita in a month. Loser has to buy the winner a game on his/her handheld Guess who won? http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=193531

Me!

When Sony was screwing up with the PS3, it was clearly arrogance. Their PR proves that - "People will buy a PS3 even if it had no games." "People will have to get 2 jobs to get a PS3." "The PS3 is too cheap." The $599 price, lack of rumble (last gen tech), loss of third party exclusives (GTA, FF, DMC, Tekken, etc. etc.), crappy first/second party games, etc. etc. But by 2009 Sony did a complete rebranding and made a complete comeback that carried momentum to the PS4.

It's a shame cause the Wii was my favorite console last gen, and the 3DS is amazing.  I predicted the Wii U would sell 40 million (admittedly I let some outside factors influence me - my original prediction was 25 million), but it'll be lucky to get half of that (it won't). I am a HUGE Nintendo fan.

On the other hand, Nintendo the past 4 years have gone insane. Have they done anything right?

1- New Super Mario Bros. U and Nintendo Land do not have online. In 2012 this was unacceptable
2- The weak hardware. What the heck Nintendo? It made sense for the Wii because of the controller. The Wii U does not have that luxury. They couldn't give us at least something that could be ALMOST near the PS4/One? Maybe a Dreamcast to the PS2? Instead we get something weaker than the Xbox 360 and PS3 and then Nintendo charges us $349 for it! What the heck were they thinking? Unbelievable.
3- The gamepad controller. Appeals to no one. The Wiimote appealed to non-gamers (and even hardcore gamers). Not even Nintendo is utilizing it. Did they just throw it on cause tablets were popular at the time with no planning? Probably. When I first saw them unveil the controller I thought it was a joke, and that it was a complimentary controller. When they were serious about it the next year I made like 3 threads (on different forums) asking what was going on and no one knew. Everyone was just as confused as I was.
4- The name. Nuff said.
5- Their online still sucks
6- Super Mario 3D World isn't what gamers wanted. We wanted a Super Mario 64/Galaxy type game in HD, imagine how glorious it would have been. The sales reflect that. 3D World is probably a great game but it doesn't have near the appeal 64/Galaxy type game would have. Also no online multiplayer - Nintendo are you kidding me? F-
7- Zelda cel shaded. Ugly graphics. Their E3 2012 demo looked so cool.  Instead we get an ugly cartoon that looks like it's trying to be between Wind Waker and OOT/TP. Also, Zelda - like Metroid - is supposed to have the more "realistic" graphics because even Nintendo admitted it themselves. There is an event in Melee where you fight Nintendo's "realistic" characters and Link is among them! This Zelda will not be a big hit. Compare it to Twilight Princess which is the most hyped Zelda of all time.
8- No console Pokemon. Seriously could sell a billion, and Pokemon amiibos? Trading card game fad all over again. Instead Nintendo is content with letting the Wii U fail.
9- Amiibos. No point outside collecting them.
10- Smash Bros. 4 , came out way too late (2 years after release) and no 8 player online play? Sad. They couldn't even give this game a subtitle.
11- Retro Studios not being used to full potential. This dev team could possibly bring us a new FPS game that will blow our rocks off, instead we are given Donkey Kong Country: TF which had no online play. It also flopped badly in sales. Good.
12- Game droughts because they didn't prepare for HD. LMAO HD consoles have been around since 2005 and they were caught off guard (like devs were from 05-08) and they didn't prepare? WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?!?!?!?!!? Now they have had massive gaming droughts. This is the first time we won't get a Zelda console 2 years after console release.
13- No new IPs. Splatoon is like their only new IP this gen. Nintendo could do that for the Wii (even though the Wii had a couple new IPs) because of the Wiimote, but Nintendo needs to start expanding its library ASAP. Gamers don't get as excited for Smash Bros. or Zelda as they did in 2006-08.
14- Scaring away third parties. Nintendo made billions of cash from the Wii and DS. That probably could have bought some good exclusives from third parties and could've helped them out a bit as well. Instead Nintendo scares them away.
15- The Virtual Console STILL hasn't even reached a third of its potential
16- No more E3 presentations

Added: 17 No achievements,18 buying Sonic as its third party exclusive

Now the good things Nintendo has done with the Wii U:

- Mario Kart 8. Came out at a good time (Mario Karts tend to come out 1.5-2 years after a console release) and was a hit and really good
- Saving Bayonetta 2
- Nothing else

Nintendo in the Wii era seemed like geniuses. Porting Twilight Princess to the Wii was a genius move. Packing Wii Sports? Wow. Packing Nintendo Land? Wow, but not the good kind of wow. We finally get a Nintendo HD console and we get Mario 3D World and a cel shaded Zelda rather than epic games.

Did Nintendo become arrogant or something? And think they can do no wrong? What was their gameplan with the Wii U? Every decision they have made this gen has baffled me.

IMO there is so much wrong with your comment  dont even know where to start...:

1 Those games dont need online
2 yes weak hardware but PS4 and XBO are also weak (compared to my !4 year! old computer) yet they market their products as powerful LOL
3 it appeals to me it could use better battery life and could use a normal rumble motor instead of a shitty cellphone one that makes WWWWWWWT WWWWWWWT
4 Name is shit I agree
5 nope it does not (a redundant fee that just exsists so one can milk the consumer because one does NOT offer player hosted serves on purpose does suck)
6 yes I agree but they tried to make a NSMB (that sells great) and Mario Galaxy (that does not) hybrid game. To get some sales.
7 It looks fantastic.. TP is the worst 3d Zelda of all time.(console one!) Relies way to much on nostalgia. Is the worst looking Zelda (looked bad the day it came out) Epona is semi useless the world is empty  ugly nude chicken humans  no holes in the ground with secret rooms/caves etc etc etc (btw hyping is stupid)
8 not Nintendos decision its up to gamefreak to make one as far as I know.
9 I semi agree. They do have other uses but they really have wasted potential
10 yes to late. Not being able to play in a team with one of your WiiU friends is a bigger flaw than NOT having 8 player online Imo.
11 yes but maybe they dont want to make the same game every year? DK also makes more money than Metroid.
12 There is not much you need to prepare for HD. Thats nonsense. Especially when your engines and software tools get better and better. Its easier to make e.g a human than it was 20 years ago. And you always make textures etc better than the ones you end up using because you compress them etc. Also Mario IP is mostly art style and not realism. Mario Galaxy in HD does look like a HD title. And none of their games so far look bad other than NSMBU because its a cheap copy paste job from the Wii engine with stock photoshop effects etc.
(the only thing where I agree about the learning is that NIntendo has no idea how to use bloom. It should be subtil Nintendo uses it on super ultra extreme mode...)
13 maybe
14 nope third party cannot compete with Nintendo so they dont even try. Nintendo does help out third parties but you seem to think third party means Ubisoft EA and Activision only. I never want to see any of their mainstream titles on WiiU. I want quality. Titles like Rayman are fantastic. The "visuals are more important than even framerate" nonsense is not.
15 yes the VC is stupid and overpriced. (especially when you are NOT from the US.)
16 Noone needs an E3. If you cannot educate yourself and find out that a Nintendo Direct exists its better you are not even part of a gaming community.
17 achievements are a waste of time. They serve no purpose other than artificially lenghten a game  and let people compare e-penis size. Has nothing to do in gaming at all. Unlockables on the other hand like Goldeneye 64s  paintball or DK(head) mode are cool. They give you a challenge and reward you with something of value.  Trophies etc on the other hand are just a remnant of that and the stuff that once was unlockable is not DLC you have to buy.
18 nothing wrong with that. The only thing that is wrong with that is that Nintendo didnt help develop the games.

*19 (you forgot this one) Nintendo does not need voice chat. I dont want to hear 12 year olds that say stuff like "you have no reallife you loser go f* your mom in the ass" like I hear in GTA 5 or COD games. The less contact I have with stupid people the better. And there is exactly ZERO point in telling someone how bad he played or how much better I am ...Its just ego boasting and something little kids do. I also think there is no reason for any website be it Youtube or some kind of forum to have a "thumbs down" option. Its like they wanted to give people that never learned how to write text a way to still show they disagree with something...

OP, do you own a WiiU?

Always seems like we get threads like these from people who don't actually *own* a WiiU.

I am wondering this as well, because so much of what is said is entirely off base, so much so that it's like a joke thread lol.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.
