Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Wii U is the only console to ever baffle me

- Retro Studios not being used to full potential. This dev team could possibly bring us a new FPS game that will blow our rocks off, instead we are given Donkey Kong Country: TF which had no online play. It also flopped badly in sales. Good.

How did I miss this? I'm so dissapointed that I don't care about them anymore. Retro needs to surprise me a lot, but I guess the next surprise is DK3 or so.

Proud to be the first cool Nintendo fan ever

Number ONE Zelda fan in the Universe

DKCTF didn't move consoles

Prediction: No Zelda HD for Wii U, quietly moved to the succesor

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

"People will have to get 2 jobs to get a PS3."

This part is misquoted very often. Pretty much every time I see it. It was something to the effect of: "If people can't afford it, we'd like to think that it's a console people wouldn't mind working two jobs to afford."
Saying "people have to get 2 jobs" implies that it's unaffordable for everyone. And while that may have been the case for many people, that's not what they were saying in that particular quote.

Just an FYI. Your point remains true, however.

Instead we get something weaker than the Xbox 360 and PS3 and then Nintendo charges us $349 for it!

WiiU isn't weaker than PS3/X360. It has 4 times as much RAM, for example. Only thing I can think of that was better (on paper) was the PS3 processor, but it's potential was too hard to reach due to PS3 being so difficult to program for.

Zelda cel shaded. Ugly graphics. Their E3 2012 demo looked so cool.  Instead we get an ugly cartoon that looks like it's trying to be between Wind Waker and OOT/TP.

That was just a tech demo though of Wii U's capabilities. They mentioned that, so I don't think most people expected it to look like that. After all, they did this on the Gamecube as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBtAvX4Pkyk And Wind Waker ended up looking completely different.

Yeah I purposely misquoted it (I looked up the exact quotes online) just to get straight to the point. Like for example I know the "PS3 will teach discipline. Everyone will know discipline!" quote is also a myth. But yeah Sony was major arrogant during the first few years of the PS3. Nintendo is super stubborn. At least Sony changed but Nintendo is getting even MORE stubborn.

The Wii U should be significantly more powerful than the PS3/360 though. The fact is that so many people THINK (including me) the Wii U is less powerful than the 360/PS3 and then Nintendo sells it for $349 that is the problem. If they sold it for $199 less people would complain.

Yeah I know it was a tech demo, but I really wish they went with that art style. Could you imagine a Zelda game with graphics like Dark Souls + Nintendo's colorful touch? Wow. Talk about a system seller!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VE2Dc1sx71U

That reaction to TP is the greatest E3 reaction ever. People really wanted a realistic Zelda game. That's what people want and Nintendo needs to get that. The Souls series and its spin offs have now replaced Zelda as the definitive action adventure/puzzle/dungeon franchise.

Not every game should need online to be relevant. I'm sick of people thinking this. Which is funny, because I don't play singleplayer games!

It's 2015 and every multiplayer game - especially Mario 3D World and Nintendo Land - needs online.

Its 2015 why am paying for online and not able to do cross platform play?

Sony charging for online is really annoying I agree.

I agree that no one is really using the gamepad in a interesting way.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

a) That's the thing. The Wii U doesn't even appeal to Nintendo gamers. Nintendo gamers (mostly) want a Super Mario 64 HD sequel, a Zelda with OOT/TP graphics, etc. etc. It just blows my mind Nintendo finally gets an HD console and instead of giving us something as incredible both graphically and gameplay wise as Galaxy is just mindblowing. Not to mention 3D World doesn't even have online, which was UNACCEPTABLE in 2013. Nintendo wanted a multiplayer Mario and didn't even make it online.... that is surreal. Even if they wanted to focus on local multiplayer online is just an option.

b) The Wii U actually sold for a loss anyway because of the high price of that gamepad controller. If Nintendo went to the power route they'd find profit faster because the price of the CPU/GPU would have went down significantly (they usually go down 40% after the first year). And at least they'd be getting ports, much better than getting nothing. Also the Wii U could still have BC because Wii games shouldn't be too hard to emulate, but even then I'd rather have a super powerful console without BC than what the Wii U is now.

a)The Wii U does fine with Nintendo gamers. The brand just isnt strong enough to have a console that sells more than 20m lifetime. I agree about online I dont get how Nintendo doesn't see it as an intergral part of gaming.

b)You assume the gamepad hasent dropped drasticaly since release. Touchscreens are as prevalent as ever and there isn't a ton else going on in the inside of the controller otherwise. My point about ports it it would turn out exactly the same as it has now. Devs would not try with their releases(even with the specs you provided) as they didn't with the U because they are afraid to invest in their games on Nintendo. Nintendo would not get good sales with their half assed tries(just like the U) because people would buy the definitive versions of games on PS3/4/X1/360 and the 3rd party execs would do what they do now. "We gave them the (shittiest version of the) game and they wouldnt buy it. We cant justify spending more money on releasing U games." The specs you gave would have the same result we are having now(save for better looking 1st party). If the U were 2x as powerful as the PS4 we would end up with the same results as we have now. 3rd parties gave up on Nintendo because of the Gamecube and that has never been repaired.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

Retro Studios had (has?) the chance to become the next Rare. Unfortunately they have become Rare in that they are now forced just to churn out Donkey Kong titles (like how Rare is forced to churn out Kinect Sports titles).

DKCTF is a great jewel, and a good reason to someone have a wii U. I love the game so much.

a) Has Nintendo ever explained why they hate online gaming so much? In 2004 their excuse was that "No one cares about online" but what about their excuse now?

Anyway the Wii U isn't doing well among Nintendo gamers. 3D World and Celda aren't what they wanted really, and the gamepad has faced similar backlash.

b) By 2013 Nintendo was still losing money and they have yet to release separate gamepads so it shows it costs more money than we think. A super powerful console loses its costs fast. The PS3 cost $840 to make in 2006 but by 2009 it was only $300. The 360 cost $525 to manufacturer in 2005 but by 2006 it was only $325.

And yeah, Nintendo would still have to work with third parties. It wouldn't just magically happen if they had a more powerful console. This is why I think Iwata and Miyamoto need to either get fired or retire as soon as possible.

I stopped reading at the Wii was my favorite console last generation. The Wii had some great games in the Galaxy games, Last Story and Xenoblade but the 99.9% shovelware and the fact that what great games it did have were so few and far between i just don't understand how that could be true.

a)Im guessing it has something with them gripping onto the local multiplayer family experience. As if online would rip apart families.

I fail to see this gamepad backlash other than people saying that it should be dropped in order to make a cheap skul

b)Why would Nintendo release seperate gamepads(they did sell them for $150 at launch)?  You can get a phone with a hell of a lot more features/technology than the gamepad for $50, so the cost of it should be signifigantly lowerthan that.

Nintendo isnt going to blow money on 3rd parties unless they are getting an exclusive game out of it. Again they dont have money to loss lead with.

Personally I would also like to see Iwata and Miyamoto go, but I think Nintendo has already set its course and it cannot be set right
