Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Wii U is the only console to ever baffle me

There's so much time between Zelda releases that it can really be compared to games that could release two titles before Zelda can release a new game. It may be the reason that other, quicker to update rpgs could take its place.

I don't understand your post, can you worded somewhat differently?

I'm serious about that, my english is failing me :P

There's usually a tonne of time between Zelda releases, so a game that releases twice as fast and gets similar praise would be seen as more popular overall, but it could just be that it's so long between Zelda releases that the time nobody talks about it is longer.

What about the rise of indie games? Cute games ARE the industry. Except to the large companies that can't afford to take risks.

Nintendo is not an Indie.

The only way Zelda will ever again see sales on the level of Twilight Princess or Ocarina is if they make it palatable to the "hardcorez" crowd with a style they don't perceieve as "kiddy".

You know what I like about Nintendo? They make games that they're proud of making.

Zelda TP for the GameCube actually sold very well.

From Nintendo's own official shipment data:

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time               7,60
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii)               7,26
The Legend of Zelda               6,51
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past               4,61
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker               4,43
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link               4,38
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword               3,76
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask               3,36
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (NGC)               1,32

TP on NGC is the second worst selling Zelda game on Home Consoles excluding remakes/collections/remasters (missing on the table is Four Swords Adventures as Nintendo gave no data for that, so its <1m) 1,3m might not sound so bad when it had another version released on a system that sold faster than money, however I woudn't call those numbers "very well"

Alright, so you say that the big gap between Zelda releases is what's drecreasing the popularity of the series, as with no games around the series is not talked about unlike something like AssCred that already has more games than the Zelda series and gets so many games all the time that people keep talking about them?

Fair enough, I guess that's a compeling argument, however why doesn't the same affect something like GTA? Games barely get released yet the series is incredibly popular, same goes for something like Metal Gear Solid, Smash Bros. and whatnot, barely any releases in lenghy periods of time yet incredibly popular.

And its not like Nintendo releases something Zelda related one year, then its nothing for 2 years until another game, since 2011 Nintendo has released something Zelda related nearly every year since 2011.

2011- Ocarina of Time 3D, Skyward Sword, For Swords Anniversary

2012 - Zelda minigame in NintendoLand (grasping at straws I know :P)

2013 - Wind Waker HD, A Link Between Worlds

2014 - Hyrule Warriors

2015 - Majora's Mask 3D, Zelda U.

Note that I said Zelda related, not Zelda game, hence Hyrule Warriors, so its not like lack of releases are stopping people of talking about the games, the brand is getting games on a constant basis, people just don't talk so much about them.

The facts are clear: The fans want a realistic Zelda. Notice Skyward Sword nor Zelda Wii U set the world on fire, but then compare it to the reactions to Twilight Princess' reveal. That's enough evidence right there. Otherwise you're in denial.

Zelda Wii U is out already? I'm sorry, did I miss something? How come they didn't give it a better title than that? First SSB, now Zelda, dangit.

Also, you love judging the success of Zelda games based on the hype they got from the live E3 crowd. How do you judge Zelda Wii U's hype when there was no live crowd? By your logic, no live crowd = no hype. Either way, you're still ignoring my question and comparing sales based on live E3 crowd reactions. I asked you to come up with something else (which you did in the first 85 percent of the post, so I'll gladly give you credit for that - that was actually a strong point), you still fall back to the same old tired ass reasoning.

Here's some things about Wind Waker:

1) Phantom Hourglass = Wind Waker 2. It's a direct sequel and everything.

2) Like I said, this game was doomed from the moment Nintendo did the bait-and-switch. If Nintendo would have made TP first and WW second, the latter most likely would have been received much better, especially if it got the mulitconsole release.

3) It was a GameCube game. On a userbase of 22 million maximum, it was always going to be doomed. Twilight Princess is available across two consoles with combines sales of 120+ million, and was a launch game on one of them, meaning it was the biggest fish in a very small pond. It's not hard to figure out which game has the better prospects.

The vast mayority of gamers don't want Zelda anymore, they could make it with the Fox Engine with Johnny Depp making mocap for Link the game wouldn't explode in popularity, Zelda is not that big of a deal anymore.

Dark Souls, Elder Scrolls and many other have surpassed the Zelda series in nearly every way possible.

Also, while the artstyle certainly helped, the main reason Twilight Princess was such a huge hit is because it was a Wii launch title, it was essentially the only game worth getting for the system for the first months, had the game came out in 2011 instead of SS it wouldn't have had the same level of success as it did.

Twilight Princess released at the right time, nothing more, nothing else.

Thank you. This sums up what I've been saying all along. I asked this guy earlier how come Majora's Mask only sold half as well as Ocarina of Time despite having the exact same engine and art style, he blames it on the 3-day cycle as if it was that huge of a game changer.

It sold very well for the circumstances. The fact is even Nintendo has admitted the art style for the Wind Waker was detrimental to sales, but wer in complete denial. I always thought it was a well known fact that TP got most of its hype from its art style. When did history start to be rewritten? I still remember all the polls about Wind Waker, all the threads on IGN.

Huh? Majora's Mask 3-day cycle is the main reason it didn't sell so well. That WAS a game changer to many people.

Why is history being re-written? Shall I open up all those threads from 2004-06 about Twilight Princess? People want a realistic Zelda game.

I never said people don't want a realistic Zelda game. I never said the cel-shaded style is more popular. I made my point clear several times.
