Will Sony make a successor for Vita ?

Yes, they can make a successful handheld. 77 20.81%

No, they're done with portable gaming. 293 79.19%

Total:370

of course not.... especially now that apparently the Handheld market is shrinking as well.

No. Better put all the effort on PS4/PS5

I think they should save money and just focus on console

The PS Vita came out in late 2011. Given a typical 5-year hardware cycle, the successor would be out late in 2016. Given where the market is headed (mobile gaming, no demand for expensive hardware), I don't see them releasing a PS Vita 2.

If they were to design a handheld with powerful hardware, it would be too expensive, and no enough people would buy it to support the platform.

If they design it with common hardware, there wouldn't be any incentive to buy it.

Not to mention that all of their first party studios are all probably busy developing for the PS4 anyway.

At best, they will release an updated Vita, and prolong its life while still selling it at a profit.

For me Sony made three crucial mistakes with Vita:

- Overengineeredthe device

Vita is a full generational jump from PSP.  The jump in perfomance is comparable to the one from PS2 to PS3.

This made Sony release an expansive platform in the market in a time when Nintendo had already tasted with the 3DS first months in Japan that there is no market for a $250 handheld anymore.  Nintendo had the wisdom to cut the price of the console fast while Sony was dumb enough not to take notes from this and released the platform at a high price anyway.

I really believe that Sony shouldn't have designed the Vita to be so much more powerful than the PSP.   Vita's main competitor, the 3DS is in many ways an  enhanced PSP and consumers are fine with it.     A redesigned PSP with Two analog sticks + Camera + improved screen could have been way more attractive.

-  Too many console like games for a Handheld.

Games like Uncharted, Borderlands 2, LBP and others are cool on HOME CONSOLES but not as attractive on a handheld platform.  With few exceptions like Gravity Rush, Soul Sacrifice and Tearaway.  Vita sometimes looks like  a platform to play games that can be enjoyed in a better way on the PS3.

- Losing Monster Hunter to Nintendo.

In my opinion this was the final nail in Vita's coffin.    In many ways this reminds me of Final Fantasy VII situation during the N64/PS1 days.

I still can't believe Sony just let Nintendo secure exclusivity of this game.  Specially considering how important this franchise was to the PSP.

MH was one of the games that defined and made the PSP succcessful in Japan.

i agree with this a LOT, especially the Monster Hunter part... no actually every single point is really important as a reason to why the Vita failed in sales.

a much cheaper vita (120 dollars), with exclusive Monster Hunter plus more handheld games and less console like games would indeed done MUCH BETTER.

knowing that Nintendo has a lot of system sellers like Pokemon, Mario, Zelda and now stuff like Yokai Watch i still cant belive that sony let the MH exclusitvity go away from them that was their big system seller.

1. Vita is 100% undertracked in VGChartz and there are a lot of proofs for this.
2. How do you know the Wii U will be longer supported than the Vita?
3. Wii U has 0% Third-Party Support, Vita has at least ports from good games!
4. And Vita is still getting exclusive games in 2015, Grim Fandango, J-Stars, One Piece Pirate Warriors 3 etc. are all Playstation/console exclusive! Vita owners are happy!

i'll respond one by one, as you've already numbered the list for me...

1. 100% undertracked? what does that even mean? the vita is selling like shit. the vita tv got a price drop from retailers it was selling so badly...

2. i don't know it and i didn't claim to, i said judging from nintendo's history, 5-6 years is the average and they've never supported a system for less than five full years.

3. wii u has third-party support and more stuff will be announced this year. it also has great third-party support in japan, and at least dragon warrior x (a dragon warrior mmo) or the next installment, xi, may be brought over to the west.

4. vita is getting games from bargain-bin publishers of niche otaku games like akiba's trip. i'll take code name steam and zelda and xenoblade chronicles and fire emblem over that any day. and so will the buying public (as they have already, which is why the 3ds it outselling it more than five to one).

Their support on the Vita pretty much made it clear that the Vita is more of an exist strategy than anything else. People will remember the way they treated the Vita when their next handheld comes out and it will take a shit ton of effort to gain back market confidence imo so no, after the Vita, Sony is out of the handheld market and Nintendo will once again, have "monopoly."

And considering the support that the Vita has, we are all better for it imo since most likely, a lot of the third party games that would have been on Sony's next gen handheld will now be for Nintendo's next gen handheld. So you get quality third party games as well as quality first party games with tons of support

1. It is undertracked and we have proofs. See my link!!!

2. Well, you cant compare the Wii U with other Nintendo consoles, the Wii U is selling worse than all other consoles.

3. Oh yes, Free 2 Play games, you call that Third-Party... And Wii U has a great support in Japan, this made me laugh a lot!
Wii U has just 2 games for the first 3 months in Japan... Vita will even have there a better support than 3DS -> God Eater 2, Sword Art Online, J-Stars, One Piece, Digimon... And so many other stuff that hasn't a release date like SaGa, Night Cry, Ys... 2015 will be the year of the Vita!!!

4. Well, if you are happy with this Nintendo games (which you played already on every other Nintendo console), I am happy with my Vita games.

There's no reason for them to be. That market is going to continue to shrink anyways and they have got bigger fish to fry. I would not be surprised if they released a new Xperia Play that is a Vita/Z3 hybrid within the next 4 years.

It's really unbelievable sometimes that Sony just let Nintendo take MH.   This franchise is born and bread on playstation and was huge for the PSP.
