Does anyone here have the new 3ds XL? I'd really like to know more about the speaker loudness and the quality of the 3d.

im in the same boat the 40$ isnt a big deal i just wanted to make sure its worth it.  so now i wonder about the screen quality and the 3d effects as the original 3ds really didnt do it for me when i saw it.

Based on some limited play time with the New 3DS XL (I'm in Australia), I personally think the New is a no-brainer, for the screen alone. It is essentially the same 3D effect as in the original, except that it is significantly more stable. I could really only 'break' the 3D effect by viewing from extreme angles. I used to use the 3D turned down and only on some games but I could see myself using this most of the time. Beyond that I didn't notice any other significant differences with the screen but I didn't do a side by side.

It's my brother's unit though so I haven't spent enough time with it yet to comment on the speaker quality.

Some other factors to consider are Amiibo/NFC, better battery and the exclusives that the New system will attract.

Sweet. Thanks for the info!

with all that said i bought a used 3ds(non XL) on ebay for 50$ and im going to trade it in to Gamestop for 75$ towards the New XL.

lol nice.
And I would go for new 3ds xl if I didn't already have a 3ds xl.
The c-stick is nice for rotating the camera in some games, and you never know what future games might be announced for it.

yea i went to gamestop today and traded in some games and with the trade in of the 3ds my preorder is paid for, with that all said what games should i get for the 3ds that i may have missed out on lately, i have been playing a few pokemon games on my dsi but im thinking of getting Zellda OoT and MM, is monster hunters any good? and do i need to playt he first few or should i be ok jumping into MH4

To me it's worth it.  The new C stick is the selling point for me, everything else is just extra.  I play a lot of monster hunter and not having to attach some funky accessory to play the game is worth the price of admission.

Plus consider all the other games that will benefit from the C stick

Then consider the slightly better hardware for faster load times and the ability to play Xenoblade Chronicles

I already own a 3DS but I'm going to give it to my nephew as a gift and get myself the New 3DS XL and I cannot wait to get my hands on it and play some MH4

Monster Hunter is one of the best franchises out there.  It takes a little getting into but once you start hunting bigger and bigger monsters and crafting more awesome gear you are hooked beyond belief.  I sunk about 400 hours into MH3U alone.

Some other good titles in my humble opinion are as follows:

  • Zelda: A link between worlds
  • Etrian Odyssey 4  - if you like oldschool first person dungeon crawlers
  • Super Smash Brothers 4

As someone that's been lucky enough to snag one of the Ambassador Bundles and has spent a couple of weeks playing around with it I can say that the New 3DS is worth every penny. Nintendo have basically fixed almost everything that was 'wrong' with the 3DS - Super Stable 3D in particular is a complete game changer, it now has a second analog stick and it now has 4 shoulder buttons. And if that wasn't enough then you've also got Xenoblade Chronicles, the best JRPG released last gen, as an exclusive in April.

Nice, can't wait to try that stable 3d thing. How about the speakers? Are they louder than on the regular XL? And did you notice if the crosstalk is less visible in games with lots of contrast?

IMHO i dont think that extra 40 is worth it, it isnt that much improved. BUT you've waited this long you might as well get the best version you can.

I'd beg to differ personally. I really don't know why anyone would bother paying so much for a regular XL now. Less game choice in the future, Smash Bros already showing a much better experience even if it's not N3DS only could well become the norm going forwards, though it wouldn't surprise me if the next Pokemon etc are now N3DS only. It's worth futureproofing in case at E3 or TGS etc., some N3DS exclusives are announced that you want IMO.

Add in the better screen and longer battery life and improved controls and Amiibo compatability built in and it's pretty much a no brainer, the only real reason to pick up the older 3DS stock now is if it's significantly reduced. (i.e. $100) and you have no interest at all in any newer stuff.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

ive been playing some Smash and stuff today love that game more on the 3ds then i do on my WiiU, also i got a demo code from someone on Miiverse for Monster Hunter 4 after playing it....Yea its a must own for me. lol

Not sure about the XL as I haven't got one, I've got an old metallic red 3DS and my New 3DS is a regular size too, but the speakers and sound quality are an improvement so I can't see the OG XL and the New XL being any different. What do you mean by crosstalk..?

Compared to my metallic red 3DS almost everything has been improved. The only minor problem I have with it is the stylus. On my red metallic 3DS the stylus is made from both metal and plastic and is extendable but the stylus on the New 3DS is plastic and non-extendable. It feels kind of cheap in comparison to the metal one to me personally but that's no big deal tbh.

I haven't gone online with it yet because I don't want to update the firmware - it's on 9.0 so once Gateway sort out compatibility I'm going to be using it for Homebrew and update the EmuNAND to 9.4 once Gateway sort it out. I'm going to be using Homebrew because someone is working on a 3D media player that isn't crippled by having a 10 minute length restriction like the official one has and because someone has started work on porting Doom in 3D. Hopefully it's only a matter of time before someone starts work on a Quake port too, both of those games in 3D will be amazing, especially Quake - that's the best FPS game ever released imo.
