Forums - Gaming Discussion - Am I the only one who doesn't care about achievements/trophies?

How do achievements influence gameplay for you?

They're a major selling point for me! 239 49.90%

I'll try to get lots of ... 56 11.69%

They're mostly good for ... 54 11.27%

I just ignore them for the most part. 89 18.58%

I wish games didn't have them. 40 8.35%

Total:478

I've noticed that this is often a talking point about games, regarding how many achievements a game has, or how difficult they are. There's even many news articles dedicated entirely to them.

The problem is, I've never been too interested in achievements or trophies. I almost never go out of my way to get them. The reason for this is, I prefer to set my own goals in games, and don't want to limit myself only to what the developers set for me, nor do I want to take hours on end just to get some of those ridiculously hard trophies. The only time I'll go after an achievement is if the goal is something I would be interested in challenging myself to do. But I do this for the challenge itself, not for the achievement.

So, I don't quite understand why some people are so interested in achievements. And I don't know whether I'm in the minority when I say I don't really care for them.

I don't either... The only value I see is like 5 seconds of fame but meh, couldn't care less

I don't find them a big deal or care too much about them either. They're mainly just for ego stroking ''hey i have more trophies and achievements that you! im a hardcore gamer!''

But they're nice small incentives to have regardless and can be fun if some of them are challenging.

If they didnt exist at all id be fine and I'd live

Couldnt give a fuck, why?? Well maybe its because in the past doing these kinds of things would unlock something in a game (Character, Outfit, hell even the BGM or Concept Art) now you get a stupid point score and are asked to fork out more dollars for these bonuses -_-

I don't care about them at all.

If you're interested in Nintendo content and understand german, maybe you want to take a look at my youtube channel! :)

I usually don't care about them either.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

They personally are not too important for me. I do see why so many people like them though, they can be quite fun to unlock.

I don't care. Those notifications are disabled on my systems. I always finished my games. And unlocked whatever I wanted. Achievements never really made me want to beat this game on hard mode faster. Or bother getting everything. The only game I ever got 100% trophies was Pacman DX. You're lucky to see any of my games go past 30%.

There are a lot of people that don't care about them.

I love them though, before achievements/trophies I would play lots of games but hardly finish any of them, going for them actually gives me a reason to finish the game

Same thing here. They have helped me expand my gaming interests. I used to play and give up on a lot of games, not my style or to broing. Now with Trophies/achievments I always finish since it is usually a silver or gold trophy just for completing the game. Now I find myself playing a lot of different games just because I gave new genres a chance via trophies. Turns out, some of the games that I thought were not my style or broing end up being really good the later 70% of the game.

I will say that I am the only one that I know in real life that has any interest in them. So, it is not something I do to compete or say look at me. It is just my own personal list of thing I have acomplished.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

I love them in the sense that they allow me to track the games I've played/completed/wasted my life on.

There's also some funny and original achievements that encourage different play styles (Deus Ex: Human Revolution, as an example), speedrunning (Braid) or doing complete random things (Half-Life 2; carrying the gnome all the game through the missile).
