COULD A PS4 SLIM BE ON THE WAY?

Samsung EVP says memory chips are 'best solution available for games consoles'; hints at a possible new slimline PlayStation system.

The PS4 Slim may soon be a reality, as Samsung today announced that it has begun mass-producing the industry’s first 8 gigabit (1GB) GDDR5 DRAM memory chips.

Rumours that the memory may be included in an upcoming gaming system were fuelled by Joo Sun Choi, executive vice president of memory sales and marketing, stating that: "We expect that our 8Gb GDDR5 will provide original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with the best graphics memory solution available for game consoles as well as general use notebook PCs." Furthermore, Samsung's press release stated that the chips are designed for use in "on-board graphics memory for game consoles".

Although these comments could have related to any number of systems, a new PS4 model seems to stack up due to the fact that Sony's console already uses 16 512MB GDDR5 chips from Samsung. Switching to eight 1GB chips would lead to obvious space and cost savings, which Samsung itself confirmed: "Combining only eight of the new 8Gb chips will achieve the same density as the 8 gigabytes (GB) needed in the latest game consoles."

With the PS4 being the only console to make use of GDDR5, Samsung's hint was received loud and clear, with forums and social media already buzzing with speculation.

I'd rather have a PS4 slime myself.

I would just hope the slim model isn't shaped like an eraser. Something more traditional looking would be nice.

People expect too many things quickly. It took 3 years to get ps3 slim. This generation gamers have little patience compared to past when it comes to games and hardware redesign.

Well that it's on the way should come as no surprise, the question is more when it's going to come.

Maybe we can also combine this with the fact that Sony specified "all 500 GB PS4s" when they made their TLOU announcement, so maybe these chips will be included in a 1 TB version of the PS4.

well, yea I can see Sony go for those 8Gbit Ram chips and make a less complicated mainboard layout once the components are at the right price

not sure how long that will take though - hopefully a slim PS4 also uses a 20nm (process) APU, but capacities of that seem too low right now/already booked by Apple and for the newest GPUs

I'm expecting PS4 SLIM in Nov 2015(15%) or Sept 2016(85%).

It's the normal evolution of hardware, and technically the PS4 SLIM could be ready for Nov 2015, even though I'm expecting it in Sept 2016. Price ? $279 if released in 2016.

This really tells us nothing about any time frame. We know there will be a Slim at some point.

It's the same as if Sony announced that they are able to produce smaller plastic cases now.
