Title says it all. I'm always hearing how The Last of Us or evDark souls has been goen some nutjobs think Quantic Dreams games have the best story in gaming. It's just not true. Dark souls actually uses gameplay to tell a story in a way "cinematic" games don't, and that's why it's the best in the medium at story telling. Dark Souls told a better story by placing Items in certain locations than Beyond: Two souls did with a larger budget, tons of dialogue, and two high dollar, A-list actors. Item descriptions make it so the items themselves, not the benefits they bestow, are their own rewards because the descriptions can change your entire perception of the story in a few words.
Players lived the story themselves. The world isn't created to give you every detail of the story. It's a world in a state of decay and you're just passing through it, having to come to your own conclusions as to how things played out. As many adventure and try to find their answers, the frustration of countless deaths piles up and doubtlessly caused many to quit the game before its completion, almost as if they'd gone hollow themselves. Because of these things, the story of Dark Souls is still relevent and hotly debated even today.
