Forums - Gaming Discussion - Nintendo's AC Adapter Policy Isn't Fair - Kotaku

20 pounds for the charger?! Not even Apple sells stuff so expensive! Seriously, the thing costs next to nothing to manufacture and it's simply a way to increase the price of the system through the back door. Does anyone seriously think Nintendo would raise the price to 209 $ with a charger included? Never ever, they don't wanna break the psychological barrier of 200 $. It's the whole reason the thing is 199 and not exactly 200! And the profit margin is already through the roof, because the tech is really dated and not even in a small case. I wouldn't be surprised if the actual manufacturing costs are below 50 $. Take in R&D and marketing and you're still way below 100 $. The margin is 50 % at the very least. There is no reason to not include a power adaptor, no reason at all.

People defending this are out of their mind, seriously. Imagine a PS4 without a power cord. I mean, it's a standard cable, everyone has one of those, right? It's not even comparable, because Nintendo doesn't use standard cables... It just fells like Nintendo is cheating on their customers. It may be just a small thing, but it still sucks.

When I got my first Gameboy as a kid, there were batteries included. When I got my Vita for 99 € (!) there was a power adapter and cable included, although it's standard micro USB. Even an 8 Gig memory card was in the package along with 10 games to download.

It blows my mind, really. I can't get over it. It already freaked me out when I bought my 3DS XL. Sure, the 10 € didn't hurt me too much, but I just felt cheated by Nintendo. I don't even... ahh, screw it. =P

Nintendo loses 1 sympathy point in my book. That's all.

Hey look europe does not get a power supply with the 3ds xl... well who cares.

Hey look the US does not get a power supply with the new 3ds xl ITS UNFAIR.

@ Nintendo dont be stupid and just give everyone at least this here.

So people can at least charge it with their PC WiiU PS4 or XBO consoles. This one costs nothing because it has no circuitry whatsoever.

Man I've seen about three threads on this in the past day...

Anyway I think that they should've included the charger since it is an accessory that it requires to function, but at the same time, they are pretty readily available. Plus, if the charger is around $20 to buy individually then wouldn't it be the same price if it came with the system. The only major problems I see with this is that if stores run out, your screwed if you don't have a 3DS or if people don't know that it doesn't come with a charger, which I assume most people will know. I still think that this is a very poor decision on Nintendo's part that would most likely cost them very little to add when manufacturing, but it's not the worst thing ever.

Imagine if consoles were sold without online included.

I agree it is rather dumb to not have the charger. I mean it is illogical. the only thing I can think of is that at this point Nintendo expects the majority of their new 3DS model sales to be from people who have the original and are just rebuying, rather than from new customers

give the choice for consumers, so they will buy what they need and want.

if it had cost 220$ and cames with charger, most of consumers who already have the charger would prefer to pay 20$ less to not having something they already have.

But nothing change for those who dont have the charger, just buy a charger separlly. Of course it must be in the shelf beside.

I agree. I knew they were already doing this in Japan and Europe and I regret not being mad about it on principal before it became my problem.

It's still not my problem since I already own a 3DS and thus a charger. But the problem is now in my region and it's a stupid choice on Nintendo's part.

To those defending Nintendo's rhetoric, here is proof positive that the savings on the absent charger are being passed on to Nintendo, not to the customer.

3DS XL launch price in Japan (no charger): ¥18,800
New 3DS XL launch price in Japan (no charger): ¥18,800
3DS XL launch price in UK (no charger): £179.99
New 3DS XL launch price in UK (no charger): £179.99
3DS XL launch price in US (with charger): $199.99
New 3DS XL launch price in US (no charger): $199.99

See the problem here? In Japan and in the UK, the New XL was valued at the same price as the original XL. None of those models included a charger, so we can conclude that the value of the New XL in 2014 is equal to the value of the standard XL in 2012. In America as well, the New XL is valued at the same price as the original XL was, but there is something missing from the box. This means that, if Nintendo is to be believed, the New model is considered more valuable in 2014 than the XL was in 2012. But this is clearly not the case anywhere else in the world.

In other words, Nintendo is lying through their teeth. No savings are being passed on to the customer in America.

Please all folks brabbling about a price tag of 220 $, read this post!
