Forums - Nintendo Discussion - 10 reasons Why SSB Wii U is the Biggest disappointment of 2014

Now I would never diss a game just to get attention, take a second to listen before you think this thread is hating.  Try to picture yourself as me, waiting 6+ years for a new SSB, after a rather mellow but admittedly rather innovative and fun successor to Melee.  Now after all the delays and leaks I'll tell you why, in my words 10 reasons why SSB for Wii U was in my opinion, more disappointing than Destiny.

1.  Weak Roster:  I know this is kind of subjective but I think almost everyone thought the roster was decent at best.  Newcomers like Shulk and Megaman actually add to the game, and gives games like Xenoblade much needed notoriety.    While characters like Bowser Jr. and PacMan just don’t play as well, and don’t add very much like the new guys did in Brawl.

2.  Choice in characters is also weak: Is there any reason to have 3 Kid Icarus and 4 Fire Emblem characters?  No one cares that much for those games.  =/.  And seriously, more Mario characters?  Not a single new Zelda character, or Sonic, or Metroid?  Ridley?  Knuckles?  Vaati? Dixie Kong?  Reyn? Anything would be better than having Lucina, Dark Pit, and Dr. Mario wasting up slots.  Seriously Nintendo =/

3.  Not a single new Gameplay idea: Come to think of it, there is a lot less than there was in Melee in terms of technical stuff.  This is the least glaring issue I have with the game, because it does run fast and plays a little bit better than brawl.  But WTF?  It's 2015 why should a game be basically a carbon copy of a game made 6+ years before it?  And lacks the depth of a game made 12 years before that?  That just doesn't make sense to me, not a single innovation in the entire damn game.  Come on guys  =/

4.  Stage Builder is still weak at best:  Do I really need to elaborate on this?  I made better ones on Brawl.  =/

5. Unnecessary Character Cuts: This is probably the most disappointing of them all.  Ice Climbers and Wolf were my mains, and they were completely original and creative characters that actually ADDED TO THE GAME.  I've been maining Ice Climbers since Melee and their removal is one of the stupidest thing on SSB Wii U for me.  I mean Lucas is necessary but why?  Earthbound is a far more popular and known/reknowned series than Fire Emblem and Kid Icarus will ever be.  Yet these characters are cut and replaced by clones, wasting slots which add nothing to gameplay and the expansiveness of Smash as a whole, since these characters already have 2-3 characters represented.    Seriously guys.  =/

6.  Palutena's Guidance:  Sorry, to me it is not funny.  It is lame, boring, full of hollow advice and cheap humor.  I mean on Kid Icarus Uprising it was kinda funny but no one cares about these characters like Viridi appearing and talking about sweet nothings when no one even knows who she is, since she’s not even in more than one game.  Compared to the ones with Snake which were actually funny and interesting this is something that not even a 4 year old would find humorous imo.  I couldn't even take myself to listen to all of them once.  INB4 OP has no sense of humor.   =/

7. Trophy Selection:  Another glaring fault with both versions is the trophy collection.  More than 70 percent of the ones on the Wii U are direct copies of the ones on Brawl with NO GRAPHICAL ENHANCEMENT, and the others are direct model rips, also with no enhancement at all; not even in the textures.  Looking at the Metroid and Fire Emblem collections I see very few new ones.  (Though there are a few from Other M)  In contrast to brawl, which redid a lot of older models/made their own new models of characters so they could be represented in the game, and look more cohesive.  In the 3DS version the selection is even weaker, attributing more than 80 percent of the Fire emblem trophies to the newest game, which all look poorly rendered even for handheld standards, not to mention most of them are also taken directly from 3DS games, while the franchises that don't have 3DS releases suffer.  I.e Metroid, Earthbound, Xenoblade ect.

8.  Stickers are cut: Why?  I liked these cause they allowed more characters to be featured in the game without all the work of making 3D models.  Not to mention they are replaced by the blame character stat builder which is FAR LESS robust than the sticker character builder in Brawl, which allowed you to modify more stats, such as adding Fire to attacks and making energy attacks faster ect.

9. Stages are also weak and not many: Going with the tone of this whole rant, I am comparing this to Brawl, the Wii U’s hardware capability and Nintendo’s past abilities to create new ideas.  Not only are their less new stages in than in Brawl, and a lot of the new stages are poorly made, one platform auto-scrollers/Background rotators.  This would be fine to me but the fact there are no new ideas in any of the stages , with the exceptions’ of the Bosses and Donkey Kong stage, which are a hollow gimmicks and didn’t even enhance the game’s overall flow.  Also, the picks in classic stages are poor.

10.  No Story Mode:  When you cut a feature that was such a great part of what made Brawl so interesting to the fans, like SubSpace then at least replace it with something similarly fanservice-y.  Instead we get Smash Tour.  A poorly made Mario Party clone which is random and at best good for a few laughs.  So sad to not see any cut scenes between any of the characters in this game.  I was looking forward to seeing Shulk and Ness talking or something wacky to tickle my JRPG fancy.  Or DeDeDe and Luigi rekindling their past friendship.  But still no, it's like everything that could of taken a long time to complete was cut from this game for the sake of pure laziness and rush.  Laziness.

Closing.  While I think some features in SSB Wii U are good includements, like Character builder and the improved online, this game is clearly lazily done and very cheaply produced by video game standards.  Graphics are poor even for the console it is on, and the remixed music are few a far between.  And the worst part is, Nintendo thinks this lazy half-baked attitude is okay, and many fans think this is okay also.  Like porting over Mewtwo is worth the long wait and for buying both versions.  =/  With their recent 3D Mario games and Zelda remakes every year it's clear to me that Nintendo is milking the cash cow down to its last utters, and failing to even feed their cows with the right nutrients (Like actually changing the gameplay in a more modern way, and not releasing the same games over and over again with like 2 new features that don't in any way compensate for the removal of 10+ of the deeper ones. ) Which lead to weak rotten cheese milk.   That's not idealisic people,  it's just real.   D^=

/End of Rant.

I just bought this the other day

I did play it before at my friends and I know I like it so whatever

I can't really comment though because of my limited time with the game

Oh... I haven´t played yet.
But I have played Playstation All Star Battle Royalle on Vita last week!
It was kinda cool!

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

This may not end well, opinions are opinions. Good luck man

What about for first timers like me? Everything feels new to me despite a lot have been saying its the same old same old.

I agree with numbers 9 and 10. There could have been a lot more new stages, rather than just mixing them with older ones. An Adventure Mode of some sort would've been nice, too.

Other than that, the game's great!

Well if that's the case, I'm sure you'll like it a lot, but you're missing out on a lot if you don't play Melee.  It's the best in the series imo

I'll take this in turn:

1) Opinion, I suppose. I'll agree I wasn't a huge fan of Bowser Jr. getting in, but I thought the additions of Shulk, Duck Hunt (who I initially despised and eventually turned out to really enjoy), Mega Man, Villager, and Robin/Lucina definitely made up for it.

2) Let me address this first by saying that one character from each franchise was simply a "clone" character, meaning not as much development time had to be spent on them. The reason Lucina/Dark Pit were chosen was because their moveset would be fairly easy to replicate. It's not as if their spot in the game was given to them over an entirely new character with a new moveset; they're essentially a bonus.

Secondly, I quite like FE, so shup you.

In all seriousness Uprising and Awakening were fairly recent titles and so the characters being in that game likely owe their appearance to that. I do think you're dismissing the popularity of the two games, though; they both sold pretty well for 3DS titles not named Mario, Zelda, or Animal Crosssing.

3) Define "innovation," because there's quite a bit new to Smash 4; 8 player Smash, an actually functioning online system (which you may or may not even consider innovation), overhauled classic mode and event mode, whatever smash tour is worth, etc. If you simply mean from the actual gameplay in battles itself, I'd still argue there's a fair amount of innovation to be had there, at least for a fighting game on it's fourth installment. But the ledge mechanic was overhauled, perfect pivoting is now a thing where it wasn't in Brawl (at least to my knowledge), and many of the characters themselves have undergone significant changes. Perhaps more to the point, though, a fighting game in its fourth installment probably isn't looking to make many "drastic" changes; it's rather simply looking to fine tune what it's doing already. You can argue as to whether it's doing a good job of it, but at this point Smash is less about major innovation and more about trying to get down what it's already doing.

4) I'll agree with this

5) I have no idea where you got the notion that Earthbound is far more popular than Fire Emblem, but whatever. I do wish Ice Climbers had been left in, but that was due to not wanting to jiff the 3DS version (a rather stupid reason imo). Calling Wolf a completely original character is nothing short of hilarious, however.

In short, some characters got left out; but just in terms of a franchises' popularity now, the cuts certainly make since. Uprising was a few years ago, Awakening was less than two years ago, the last Star Fox game was in the DS era, and the last Earthbound game was before the 21st century.

6) I didn't like it much either, but so what? It's a totally optional feature, and only happens on one stage and only if you taunt repeatedly for it

7) I guess? Trophies are bad? I feel like this is akin to complaining about the title screen not looking spiffy enough or something.

8) Stickers were cut to make room for custom moves, and the character stats are far more balanced than stickers. You can actually use them in play without simply breaking a character

9) I'm actually pretty certain the Wii U has more; Wii U has 46 (47 whenever Miiverse comes out), and Brawl has 41. Some stages are meh, I'll agree, but I think some are quite well done. Opinion's opinion, I suppose.

10) Subspace was garbage; replacing it with actually focusing on balancing the roster and making the online worth half of a chocolate biscuit was a much better decision.

I hate that thet took out the Subspace. Their reason for doing that is also incredibly stupid.
