Forums - Nintendo Discussion - I don't want Retro to make the next Metroid game.

Alright, I will stop as well.

While I agree that Retro should move on, I guess I was just getting at the fact that Retro was extremely faithful in converting the Metroid experience from 2D to 3D.

I'd say that they were extremely good at putting a unique spin on the Metroid experience. The same way that, while I love DKCR, I definitely don't think it feels anything like the original Country trilogy and honestly kind of wish they called it something else. And the same way I really want them to make a 3D Donkey Kong because I know it won't be like 64, which I think is terrible. I think Retro has a skill for putting unique spins that work amazingly well on retro...

...

...Nintendo franchises.

And many of the items in Zelda revolve around shooting; slingshot, bow, hookshot, boomerang...

Platforming is just a means to an end in Metroid, like shooting in Zelda. The real focus is exploration.

The focus is exploration and platforming. In Zelda, you shoot as an option for combat. You don't need tact to use them and they are primerily there to diversify and embelish combat or an element to solve arbitrary puzzles. Platforming is literally integral to the entire world design of every single Metroid game. The maps in every Metroid game are designed around a complex system of precise platforming. Platforming dictates nearly everything you do in Metroid. Shooting dictates a tiny fraction of what you do in Zelda. And even then, I would not consider the boomerang or the hookshot shooting, nor would I consider anything you do while locked on shooting. It's just a ranged combat option with different effects if you're not skillfully aiming in real time.

Again, that's like saying platforming is just a means to an end in Mario. You're stretching.

While I see where you are coming from, platformers punish the player for missing jumps. Metroid doesn't do that. Samus doesn't die and very rarely even suffer a concequence from missing jumps. The only concequence is that it will take a bit longer to reach the spot you were aiming for.

Take a Mario game now, and if you miss a jump and fall from too high, you will lose a life. That's not mentioning the pits where you instantly die.

The bolded is not a rule, and the italicized it not true at all.

But this is off topic, which is why I won't elaborate.

It's ok. With that kind of response, I have come to not really care much about how you think you know better than everyone else.

...As opposed to pretending that I don't know what I'm talking about? If you want a full breakdown of why saying "platformers punish the player for missing jumps" comes from a limited and incorrect view of what makes a platformer or why saying "Metroid doesn't punish players for messing up platforming" is flat out not true and also stems from that very same incorrect and limited view of what makes a platformer, then post it in a place where that's not off topic.

We've all wasted too many pages already debating over a fact that is completely irrelevant to this thread. I'm not going to waste more just to try and prove to you why I "think I know better than everyone else."
