Atari by a long shot. Their business practices damn near erased the entire gaming industry from the face of the Earth. Constantly releasing broken clone after broken clone of the same 3 or 4 genres until customers just couldn't take it anymore. Frankly, I'm a little worried the same basic thing will happen with the PS4 and Xbone if they don't start getting some more unique games soon.

this sounds too familiar!

think about it. every game lately is some combination of gta 3 sandbox (gta iv, v, watch dogs, the crew)/call of duty 4 multiplayer-with-no-story (titanfall, ghosts, black ops i+ii, advanced warfare)/ac 2 map-clearing (ac unity, shadow of mordor)/es5 skyrim open-world rpg (witcher 3, dragon age inquisition)... it's disturbing.

better yet, each new iteration of the same old nothing comes with ever more win buttons, requiring essentially vegetative input from the "player" and no skill whatsoever. i mean, those assassin's creed acrobats who do all sorts of stuff after a single button press...

exactly, while I enjoy some of those games, the trend is kinda gross... specially the "ubisoft" trend.

Essentially. An other point to add is that even in different games of the same genre, everyone is striving for the same atmosphere, the same controls, the same physics, etc. When a game comes out that does shake things up a bit, it's slammed by critics and gamers for not following the norm.

It's poison to the industry I say!

8th gen predictions. (made early 2014)
PS4: 60-65m
WiiU: 30-35m
X1: 30-35m
3DS: 80-85m
PSV: 15-20m

The thing with what you are saying jetforcejiminy is ppl not even interested in trying other games/genres. I have two coworkers who just buy Madden NBA and Grand Theft. They have the PS4. I've tried to recommend them games that i see ppl on here talk about to no avail. On Xbox more should have tried Sunset Overdrive and Forza Horizon. It's bad to me that the same games continue to be purchased by the mass

I dont like how Sony handled Vita. Same as Wii U situation. But things have improved a little.

I'd say that the Vita's situation has gotten worse, not better, and anything good that comes to the system is more due to 3rd parties and the Vita's dedicated audience than anything Sony is doing to help.

Call of Duty does have a story :p They're not particully long (or that great), but they provide a few hours of high budget action. Can't really expect much more from a series people buy almost entirley for the MP.

Anyway, there's nothing particularly disturbing about any of this. The industry has always cycled through whatever the market is currently most interested in. Currently the most popular push has been in making games more "open". Once the market becomes bored of any particular design choice, or becomes interested in a new one, the industry will just move on to making lots of the new thing. It's no different than how for several years "mascot" titles were being made by the bucket load. Now there are barley any (outside of Nintendo).

I Don't hate any of those companies they all have something that I like.
Sony:Tv's, PS, phones and cameras.
MS:Windows, Xbox and Surface.
Nintendo:Well, they are just a gaming company, but their consoles have given me some memorable moments, and the Wii U is the current gen console that I've played the most.

Every single company makes mistakes, but what I like about these companies is the way that they fixed them.
Sony Realeased an amazing service(PS+) after releasing a really expensive console, and also supported the hell out of it with amazing games.
Microsoft got rid of most bad practices related with the XB1, and are taking a direction with the console that I like very much.
Nintendo tried to push another gimmick with their console and failed miserably, also didn't support it at first. But to me with the amazing games that they have released, they already amended that error, too bad all those great tittles are considred niche nowdays...

The only aspect that I hate about those companies are the fanboys(are we allowed to say fanboys o.o?)for whatever reason it is that they feel the need to blindly defend their choices, and also bash the ones of other people, it needs to STOP, its getting old...Just let that person enjoy their purchase, and also stop turning speculation into facts and vice versa,I've seen this around here lately and is not a pretty sight.

If we get along we all we"ll be much happier.

Out of the 3 big companies in console games, I don't hate any of them (overall, at least. Each of them make some pretty stupid decisions sometimes).

I've never owned an Xbox. But that's not because I hate Microsoft. And I don't hate Xbox, either. It's just that I'm not really interested in most Xbox games (Not enough Japanese games, primarily).

Even though I've never owned one, I'm sure an owning an Xbox is just as good as owning a PlayStation, it's just a matter of preference as to what games you like. It's pointless to try convincing someone that their opinions are "wrong".

"Never argue with stupid people. They will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience."

-Samuel Clemens

Ms is the only one I don't like. Think of the 360s last 3 years. I'd hate to see the industry dominated by them. They'd be even worse than those 3 years. But I appreciate the fact they keep sony on their toes. I like sony, ninty and pc. Also Sega back in the day

I am a big fan of Sony's tvs and audio systems, I have a PVM and a Hi Scan Sony Wega that I use mainly gaming at 240p, 480p and 720p resolutions with no input lag and great image quality and I will get a 3D TV when they become more affordable in my country.
But I don't like the Playstation much. The last Playstation exclusive I cared about were the Capcom Maximo games.

I don't like Playstation because I think it made games less arcadeish, and more like "immersive experiences" with a lot of narration and story and cinematics. I don't like those trends in gaming. I will still buy a PS4 if Virtua Fighter is not put by Sega on Steam.

you're right about it being a cycle, it's just not really a virtuous one. gaming history is littered with the overextension of certain game types... think of the (2d) platformer fest of the late nes, early snes era. everything was a platformer. then that gave way to (j)rpgs being dominant for a good bit of the nineties, then the platformer made a comeback except in 3d and that lasted into last decade (jak and daxter, ratchet and clank, "taz the tasmanian tiger" and all the other bizarre mascots, which were all in some way ripoffs of banjo kazooie)... and then open-world games and shooters and open-world shooters caught on with gta 3 and halo the same year (2001), and it's been smooth sailing ever since, right?

i think openworld games have potential, it's just none of it is in evidence right now.

also, i've always wanted to say this: watch dogs, the true crime of 2014. (just to prove how stuck we are in the same infinite loop of shit)
