Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Would it be possible for the Wii U to run Zelda U at 60fps?

Excuse my ignorance, but as both sc94597 and BossPuma are well informed and willing to share your expertise, I do have another question regarding frames per second:
In Smash Bros the main objects are 60 fps while some objects (some of the Pokémon and assist trophies) are 30 fps. Is this technique possible in a game like Zelda?

I don't see any reason why the animations of certain characters can't be 30 fps in Zelda U, if the circumstances call for it. It works well in smash because the assist trophies are there for short amount of time and flash a lot, plus there is limited control over them. I'm not sure if there will be a similar circumstance in Zelda U.  If certain playable characters in smash had 30 fps animations you would notice a huge gameplay difference in addition to being able to see it.

About fps locks, a lot of PC games do just that when you turn V-sync on lock at 60 or 30 and call it a day. It's a sensible solution since flutuating framerates won't bring just tearing, but stuttering too and that's way more annoying.

Yeah, but usually in PC games you can choose at which framerate you want to lock it by messing with the ini file, not just 30 or 60.

With 720p yes, with 1080p not.

Or with Riva Tuner (except with some newer games, damn it). It's more usefull since we have monitors with refresh rates that aren't necessarily a multiple of 30.

Also for PAL countries, the televisions have refresh rates of 50 hz and the games run at 25 fps, if I recall correctly. All displays tend to support 24hz, because that is the standard for television and movies.

PAL and NTSC are analog standards. Via HDMI, DVI or component cable, TVs will give you 60, 120 or 240hz of refresh rate, depending on the model.

My monitor is 144hz unless you mean specifically tvs

Yes, specifically TVs. Monitors follow different refresh rates (and other things). LCD TVs usually want to have high refresh rates to decrease motion blur (a problem that LCD displays suffer badly). Of course, it's only useful for sports and gaming since it will give the soap opera effect in films and most TV shows. Plasma was king by not having this issues.

When it comes to Nintendo, anything is possible. They can do stuff with hardware that few other developers can compete with.

No, i doubt it.

Windwaker, despite much simpler visuals, ran at 30fps.
Mariokart, a on rails racer, ran at 60fps, at 720p.
An open world Zelda that looks gorgeous and almost the size of Skyrim? How would they acheive 60fps? Not possible.

First off, the new Zelda is bigger than Skyrim. Just so you know. And second, it is possible for them to achieve 60fps. The Wii U can handle it. Now, with the open world like Zelda, 1080p and 60fps might not be possible, but 720p and 60fps is possible.

Scale is realative, as I was referring to both content and physical size. The map may be bigger than skyrim, but amount of content in it, such as dungeons and caverns outside the story, will only be known on release.

As for the other argument, i need to again refer to mario kart. Different devs, sure, but it's still 720p, 60fps on a linear track. The new zelda is open world, so it has much more to render at once than mario kart.

Of course, Nintendo are the equivelent of sorcerors when it comes to optimizing, so maybe you're right.

Nintendo always goes for 60fps over anything else
