Forums - Movies & TV - Why are there tons of movies about crappy superheros coming out?

What are you basing that on? Not all them superhero movies were great, but so far Marvel movies are on a roll. Same goes with Dark Knight and Man of Steel. The bad superhero movies are flops anyway, and they were in the past. X-men First class and the sequel? Great films.

I've never heard of the Guardians of the Galaxy until the movie, and as it turned out the movie was spectacular. Great characters and development, although the guy playing Drax needs a lot of improvement. If they can keep the tempo then by all means I'd love to see all the other no-names in the big screen.

I'm basing it on viewership polls and the amount of money these generic, big-budget, summer blockbuster superhero movies rake in.

I'll agree that some are pretty good, but the "Hollywood is running out of ideas" mindset is completely clear when superhero movies are the "in" thing to make.

Also, Man of Steel didn't flop.

So let me get this straight...you people aren't happy at all that these niche superheroes that we used to see only on printed paper are now dazzling everyone in the big screen?

Kids used to be labeled dorks/geek/nerd for knowing these superheroes. Not anymore.

Yeah, now these superhero movies pander to the same crowd that went to see the fourth Transformers. That's awesome.

The transformer crowd will actually get to see good movies for a change. The only people who are complaining are people who have no idea what's goiong on. Marvel has been creating a shared universe since 2008. That's why we've seen at least two movies a year with a variety of superheroes. Due to contract obligations prior to the creation of the MCU, Sony still retains the film rights to Spider-Man while 20th Century Fox still retains the rights to X-Men and the Fantastic 4, so Marvel has no say of when or how many of those movies are coming out and therfore, you may get a lot of movies with Marvel characters in one year, kind of like last year when Captain America, X-Men, Spider-Man, and Guardians of the Galaxy were all released months apart from one another.

DC finally decied that they want to create a shared universe as well. This wasn't until years after Marvel had already done this which is why we got a failed Superman sequel/revival (Superman Returns), another stand-alone Batman series, and a failed Green Lantern movie. Man of Steel marked the beginning of the new shared cinematic universe and since DC is playing catchup to Marvel, we're going to be seeing a bunch of DC movies over the next 5 years. That's also why they're going to make another Green Lantern movie. Because he's one of the vital Justice League members. That's also why the Flash is getting his own movie.

Personally, I like the superhero movies, especially since we're getting to see a bunch of superheroes who would never normally be seen on the big screen. I think it's better than 10 years ago where the only superheroes you'd see were Spider-Man, X-Men, Batman, Superman, and an occassional rare superhero who would completely bomb in theaters.

Well Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg and Green Lantern are really important people in the Justice League, which DC eventually wants to get to.

Smaller Marvel heroes are getting films because of the success they had with Guardians of the Galaxy, which had the most obscure characters. Marvel knows that their fans will watch pretty much anything they make and if they market a movie right that there's no chance it will flop on the box office.

And finally money.

The DC attempts and Spider-Man spinoffs could never happen for all I care, but Days of Future Past made the Xmen movies interesting again, and the Marvel Studios offerings are the most exciting cinematic geek offerings yet. Black Panther, Strange & Ms / Captain Marvel all getting their own time to shine? Hell yes, impossible childhood dreams realized

That's kind of an illusion. Yes, superheroes are the "in" thing . The thing is Marvel Studios is putting out most of the superhero movies. Pretty soon it'll be Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. Out of all the film companies in Hollywood, hardly anyone other than those two are making superhero movies. Compared to everything else that comes out, there really aren't that many of them. It's just that they get more press and make more money than most movies. That's why people seem to think "everybody's jumping on the superhero bandwagon" but they're not. The truth is they can't.

Because people enjoy mindless movies with lots of action and special effects. The superhero theme happens to be the popular flavor right now.

When they pull down the massive box office numbers they have been Hollywood is going to ride that hard. Until the public ties of seeing that let's them know by not showing up in droves you can expect it to continue. I am a big fan of the genre but am definitely worried about saturation diluting the quality. That is almost certainly going to happen to a an extent, unfortunately. Just hope it doesn't get too bad.

I see nothing wrong with having variety. Better to see more obscure heroes than the same Spider-man, Batman, and Superman over and over.

Considering the fact that basically one studio, Marvel, like you said, is the only one who's pumping out all these movies makes it seem like even more of an industrious ecosystem. Sooner or later people will be tired of seeing something being rebranded over and over again.

I'm not big on comic books but I'm going to see the majority of DC/ Marvel movies coming out.
