Forums - Gaming Discussion - An actual well informed gaming article on the console war

http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2015/01/06/attempting-to-understand-how-on-earth-sony-has-sold-18-5m-ps4s/?partner=yahootix

With so much junk out there lately its nice to find the rare and well written/informed gem of an article  :)

"Rather, Sony won by simply not losing..."

This sums it up pretty well. Nintendo and Microsoft made poor business decisions and Sony avoided all the design and PR pitfalls that continue to haunt Wii U and Xbox One, respectively. The huge number of PS4 units sold continues to boggle my mind, but it's easy to see why Sony is winning the so-called console war.

It is pretty good.

Although this bit is a load of crap. 'If even Sony can’t comprehend why their system is selling so well, I’m not going to pretend like I have all the answers. To some extent, it does defy logic.'
It is obvious why it is selling so well. It gives gamers exactly what they wanted, it really is that simple.

Agreed on the defy logic comment, but he nailed it when he talked about it being a game system first and foremost vs the more gimmicky aspects of the wii-u controller and the xbox kinect launch forced bundle.

Exactly and in sony's case it doesnt hurt that they have a good track record of both longevity within the console cycle 7-10 yrs per, and the abilty to compete consistently in all 3 branches of the global market unlike microsoft and nintendo.

Sony played it safe and it paid off.

Forbes has a lot of dodgy stuff on their website in regards to video games but this is a well-written article that I agree with almost 100%.

Im just glad they corrected a lot of mistakes they made at the beginning of the ps3 gen especially the price point (cause of blu ray) as well as those weird ads they had for the ps3 at the start of that cycle.

So they won by making smart decisions? Like every other winning console in history.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

With the exception of the wii edging out a win last gen (which was more marketing/new demos than anything) that is true of the rest of the gens including the current one.

Good article but PS4 sales are really simple to explain. Sony gave people what they wanted. MS and nintendo in their blinded arrogance and ignorance tried to force people into what they never wanted in the first place.
