I think it is more a two timelines thing. In SM 64 the timelines branched. One became a complicated 3D Jump n Run, the other got stuck in one of the 2D picture frames and evolved in the "New" 2D series, which is more canon than the 3D games imo.

Yeah the two timelines is how I see it. They are both part of the 'main' Super Mario series, but I look upon them as 2 distinct branches, The 2D series branch and the 3D series branch. Not really concerned about canon in the Mario series though.

But then again, where is the third timeline where Mario never beat bowser and hence bowser ruled Mushroom Kingdom and Peach was with him all the time? Is that Mario Kart?

Pretty sure that's Mario Party. Mario and friends live in servitude to the enjoyment of lord Bowser. This is why Mario PArty has the Bowser Party mode

Sounds possible. Since I have never played Mario Party, I have never experienced the darker third timeline.

Yoshi's Island

Yoshi's Island DS

Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time's past

Yoshi's New Island

That's all ive got.

I thought you just meant the original 2D series. I don't consider it a part of those games, just like the Returns series isn't part of the original Country series.

I definitely think it's part of the over all main series though.

EDIT:

It's grouped it this way:

Original 2D

Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Bros. 2 (JP)

Super Mario Bros. 2 (US)

Super Mario Bros. 3

Super Mario World

-

"New" Series

New Super Mario Bros.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

New Super Mario Bros. 2

New Super Mario Bros. U

-

3D

Super Mario 64

Super Mario Sunshine

Super Mario Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy 2

-

Isometric Mario

Super Mario 3D Land

Super Mario 3D World

-

I do think that they can make a new 2D Mario game that succeeds Super Mario World and continues that line, but I don't think the "new" series does that. I also think there can be a Donkey Kong Country 4.
