Forums - General Discussion - Dubbed or Subtitled?

Which do you prefer?

Dubbed games, movies, and TV-shows 3 15.79%

Subtitled games, movies, and TV-shows 16 84.21%

Total:19

When you watch news, a movie, a TV-show or play a game from another country, do you prefer hearing it in its original language with subtitles at the bottom of the screen or watch a dubbed version with a voice actor or just someone else speaking on top of the original voice?

I'm fine with both, but I prefer subtitles because the dubbing is sometimes done very poorly!

I prefer it being subtitled since most dubbing is done poorly.

Both must be optional!
My wife from Poland is raised with dubbed TV. It is the most horrific dubbing you can imagine: ALL voices are READ by ONE old man without ANY acting talent, just plain reading. The original sound plays simultaneously, a little toned down. She and all other people from Poland that I know, are totally OK with this.    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTnscwlKV_k
In short: you can get accustomed to almost anything - hence make everything optional always.

While we are on the subject of options: If possible I always turn down game music to zero. Nintendo games seldom give this opportunity so I play them VERY silent.

Subtitles. I hated anything dubbed.

Dubbed. I dont like spending time reading subtitles and miss the facial changes on a person.

Also hard to tell who is talking from off screen if subbed.

Subbed for me. I can't stand voiceovers.. Most of the time I find VO a poor match for the characters/persons. That and you can loose A LOT in translation in speach; moreso than in text. Also, authenticity and all that..

Subtitled anime, movies, TV etc. Games though, I sometimes prefer in English even when there is a choice. Example: Bayonettas.

I have really no preference as long as the translation is accurate. Eventually, I want to learn japanese so I can watch all of the anime and jmovies without having to worry about dubbed or subtitled plus that way I'll have a more accurate understanding of what they are saying.

As someone that is doing that now, I'd highly recommend it

How did you learn the language?
