Forums - Sales Discussion - If Nintendo launches a new console in 2016 (AMD Rumors) ...... will it be 8th or 9th gen

Nintendo will not launch a new HOME console in 2016. That would be a slap in the face for the loyal Nintendo fans who bought the Wii U. When Nintendos's new home console does comes out (2017 or 2018 the earliest) it should not be backwards compatible with the Wii U at all. They should drop the Wii association altogether when they release their new system. It should be an entirely new architecture that is capable of performing at least as good as a high end PC (not dual GPU high just whatever the performance is of a single high end GPU) in whatever year it is released. It is ok for them to make a system that is suitable for their own franchises but they should try not to alienate 3rd parties like they have been doing or else they will not survive to see another generation in gaming. The idea about being able to play the games from whatever their next portable system is, would be pretty cool too. Like Fusion suggests.

by all your logic the PS4 should be 4th gen and the xbone should be 3rd gen.

8.5 gen. I can't see it outperforming the X1 and PS4 by a great enough margin(whilst staying at a resonable price) if they put out a true '9th gen' console so soon. It would be commercial suicide. I really can't see Nintendo putting out a new home console until 2017 anyway.

In 2 years the tech for more powerful and advanced consoles will be much cheaper. I think it would be hard for nintendo to make a weaker system than the ps4 at that point in time.

Not weaker, but not significantly more powerful. Nintendo have never been known to persue outright power, not since the SNES at least. Just my opinion.

Maybe they'll have a proper 8th gen console that unites both home and handheld consoles, that would be a dream.

...Let the Sony Domination continue with the PS4...

My guess. Their next console will be an handled/homeconsole hybrid as speculated before.

AMD has the tecnology to make this possible.
These are demostrations of the AMD Mullins APU form 1 year ago.

They must be learning from their mistakes with the Wii U, its evidence enough that they are having a need to make a new console in the first place (if the rumors of a 2016 release are to be believed.) I would think that they would focus on power to gain 3rd party dev support.

Focusing on hi-end graphics wouldn't solve a thing. In the end, 3rd party developers are driven by profitability before graphical capability.

Let's assume Nintendo launches this hi-end console by late 2016, why would the average customer buy it? By that time Ps4 and Xbox One will have a huge library of games, they will be still active for years to come and, with price cuts, they will likely cost the same or less than this new N console.

At the same time, since Ps4/Xbone will already have a 50-60million userbase so, in a vicious cycle, Nintendo will only receive a marginal part of Ps4/Xbone support driving average customers away form the console, driving 3rd party support further away.

I thought the AMD rumor was that something would be announced in 2016, not launched?
Regardless, it would be considered Gen 9.

They said ''introduced'' and they were refering to the chipset from what I understood. I don't think AMD would comment on when the system would be announced, I think they're speaking of when they will internally start to ship parts to their clients (Nintendo/3rd Parties). It sounds like Dev kits will be ready in 2016, system launch in 2017.

No need to rush! I'm very happy with the current Wii u games and all the ones coming out this year.

Pretty much this. All they need is a console that can run 4Bone games at 60fps. Should be easily achievable with a 2017 launch provided they give up on the expensive gimmickry. In fact it should be possible now. I'm kind of shocked at the lack of processing power in the 8th gen consoles.

It has to be notably better then PS4/X1 (1080p, 60fps and graphically superior), like a generation better. Otherwise they're just restricting themselves to the their hardcore audience again (wii U's fanbase). They need to peg themselves as primary console choice for the following 5 years, and so it needs to be an actual successor to the PS4/X1, not just a slightly souped up version. I do think thats possible in 2017 for 399.

Essentially it needs to be the PS2, An undeniable leap over the (PS1/N64-in this case PS4/X1 and at least comparable to the PS5/X2- respectively the Gamecube/Xbox which arrived a year later but beasted the PS2). I think all of the tech demo's that we're being sold now Deep Down reveal, The Devision Reveal, Uncharted Reveal need to be what we're seeing at launch (1080p, 60fps).
