Forums - Sales Discussion - Amazon US January monthly bestsellers and general amazon based discussions

Thanks for getting back to me.  I'm only intrested in the math.  I'm a cold calculating logical kind of guy and find formulas and calculations interesting. As far as your post, Microsoft has proven that they don't know the US/Gamers as well as you claim with their disasterous pre-launch, but this has nothing to do with the math I was interested in.  COD on the Xbox was outselling the PS4 because of the exclusive marketing agreement.  Same thing happened with Watch Dogs landslide win on the PS4. These cases have an extra variable that must be accounted for.

Exactly.  As I always say, past numbers taken in a vacuum are not an accurate basis for determining present or future potential for success.  If they were, Elder Scrolls would still be super niche and FPSs would be playing second fiddle to platformers.  And one variable in this instance is actually demographics.  The demographics frequenting malls, Amazon, etc shift during the holidays; it's a different group who are less informed on the product and more easily motivated by deals and bargains.  But that's once a year and Sony *chose* to *allow* Xbox to have it.  They barely tried.  But trust me, that won't happen this year with their heavy hitters landing.

We must have all been posting simultaneously lol.

You're running on the assumption that 360 users will automatically get an X1 and that is deeply flawed. One thing's for sure is that the majority of a console's userbase is not loyal to the company who makes that particular console. This was proven from the transition from the PS2 to PS3. We are seeing a similar situation with the transition from the 360 to X1. The PS4 is winning over what I call the "swing" gamers. These gamers hold no preference for one company over another and will purchase the console they think has better value.

And this is why the PS4 is outselling the X1 even though the X1 is cheaper by $50 with two games instead of just one. Gamers see that there is more value in the PS4. Grim Fandango Remastered is coming out on the 27th; The Order: 1886 comes out next month; Bloodborne in March; MLB 15: The Show in March; Toukiden Kiwami in March; Omega Quintet in April; and Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD in spring. There are several other games coming out such as Tearaway Unfolded, Ratchet and Clank Redux, The Tomorrow Children, Wild, No Man's Sky, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, The Forest, Rime, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, and lots more. What does the X1 have to match the PS4 in terms of quality and quantity?

You'll buy and play all those games... and so will I. So will the majority of core gamers who live and breath gaming, go online and post in message boards and otherwise spend most of their time doing game related things. But dude bros wont and dude bros are what makes the Xbox brand what it is in the US.

People like us are not in the voting majority. If we were, COD wouldn't have outsold Uncharted.

Dudebros aren't the majority either. This is why it is important to appeal to as many different demographics as you can. This is what the X1 is considerably struggling at. There are RPG fans in the US as well as platformer, puzzle, fighter and horror fans. Each fanbase adds up and the cumulative population consequently becomes very large.

You've also made another major flaw by assuming that dudebros will only buy an X1. PS4 has dudebros, too, and has more of them. But let's say if the X1 and PS4 are evenly split in the dudebro fanbase, what do you do? You appeal to fanbases of other genres. The PS4 has a lot of games that appeal to those fanbases while the X1 does not.

And as others have said before, this is NOT an opinion thread. It is an indisputable fact that the PS4 is beating the X1 for the month on Amazon and that so far, Amazon has correctly predicted the monthly winner. Even though the X1 is $50 cheaper and has two bundled games instead of just one, it is still getting beaten. The gap will continue to widen since the PS4 has a considerably stronger and more evenly distributed lineup.

So after bouncing around for a while, Wii U seems to have settled back in at 51 on the hourly and is firmly set at 50 on the monthly. Wii U Pro Controller rising a bit, at 73 which makes sense with all the MK8 and SSB sales. Oh and for anyone who hasn't noticed Majora's Mask is an absolute beast.

But the Wii U's current spot at ~50 is actually starting to kill me cause all I'm thinking is that an advertised price drop to $250 now would probably really give it a solid push up into the top 30. Of course, timing is important for the effect to be lasting so I know why their waiting. However, I'm just not certain how long the Wii U can stay this consistent. But who knows, maybe it can hold out for another month or two; Kirby and Mario Party aren't "heavy hitters" but they'll prop up sales. Still, interesting to track.

In the same vein as the "upgrade" consumer, I think we also have the "secondary console" consumer. As many purchasers buy an X1 or PS4, they will ultimately due so with the potential of purchasing a secondary console. Given the pronounced overlap of 3rd party titles on those machines, and the pronounced exclusivity of the WiiU, I don't see a strong case being made for buying both. Consequently, the WiiU makes perfect sense as the secondary console. The farther we get get from the first purchase, the closer we get to the second. This may induce a lag, but it could also provide for continued sales for the WiiU, on top of those who buy it as a first console.

Man, keep cool and relax. If you don't accept the fact that PS4 wins this generation you will grown white hair too soon.

So the X1 takes the #1 spot on Bestbuy, but the PS4 is ahead again at GameStop and remains ahead at Walmart.

Amazon:

PS4: #10
X1: #15

PS4 should retake BB once the TLOU bundle is available for purchase

Though honestly i wound't trust BB top sellers list, with this "weekly ad item" tag and all.

Where is the Kinect bundle??
It´s stil at $499 !!

MS realy don´t love it´s own child...

They could at least try to push to a different audience.

Except since Oct where the Xbone has won... every... single... week.

The honest truth of the matter is that if the PS4 and XBO play out the same way this year as it did last year, then the PS4 will still be in the lead and will increase the gap.

Why.... because if we forget about the fact that MS won NOV and DEC, Sony sold more consoles in the year than MS did. So thereby sales from Jan - Oct were bigger than the gains in NOV/DEC.

So yeah MS are going to need to close that gap through-out this year and hope to outsell Sony by a considerable amount in Nov to close the current gap of 500-600k. Personally at the moment I dont see it... I dont think Sony will keep the price the same through the whole year.

Yes, if 2015 plays out like 2015, PS4 will end the year with a 1.6M+ gap (by VGC's seemingly overtracked X1 estimates).
