Forums - Gaming Discussion - is Polygon racist or biased to Japanese Games? Being Japanese a negative thing?

Polygon does seem to like to revel in the role of the contrarian at times, though they aren't very good at it. As for them being racist, I don't know, but this Gies fellow does seem to have strong opinion of Japanese games, I'd say more prejudice than racist, his comment on vanquish screams that.

As far as the apparent double standard in regards to sexual content, I do certainly agree that gtav has more explicit content, by far, but it is different from bayo 2 and killer is dead, in that you can easily play through gtav and barely see any such content unless you expressly want to yourself. Bayo 2, and to a lesser extent killer is dead, it's an unavoidable truth of the games, the former basically beats you over the head with it, and the sexuality is presented in a far more voyeuristic and immature fashion.

That said, I do feel putting that much of an emphasis on the sexual content is a cop out and doesn't really address bayo 2 or killer is dead's more pressing issues as far as being games is concerned and does a disservice to their criticism as a whole. I can't speak to bayo 2, but I do feel the first is sorely overrated because of certain clunky mechanics and one of the most disengaging stories ever told in any medium. Killer is dead is a thoroughly mediocre game by any account, suda 51 may have an offbeat imagination that can be fun to explore, but as far as gameplay mechanics are concerned he needs a lot of direction to keep his bullshit focused and elevate his games from being more than mundane, cookie cutter hack and slash tedium.

Exactly what I though as well. I have no problem with sexual content, but it's clear that there are many Japanese games that try to shove it in your face multiple times or even over the whole course of the game.
All Suda games (especially Lollipop Chainsaw), Bayonetta, Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (breast control feature), Hyperdimension Neptunia (and with it all other games that portray very very young looking girls as sex symbols) etc.

The GTA series is a pretty bad example for a Western game doing this. It does have more explicit content, but that's almost exclusively side content that no one is forced to play.

I am glad as an American that Japanese games are being phased out and Western games are taking over. Soon Japanese games will be almost completely irrelevant.

I'm tempted to find this guy, lock him in a room where a tv is playing an endless loop of the MOST Japanese I can find (like the Disgaea series, Bayonetta, Persona, Ace Attorney, Danganronpa, Yakuza, etc), and put a timer on seeing how long it takes until his head explodes.

Ever since last gen I couldn't help but notice this weird, xenophobic/ethnocentric undercurrent in gaming media that is not only tolerated but outright encouraged. And when you get down to it, nothing is earned from it; just from a purely gaming all it does is encourage homogenization, thus creating more and more samey games that damage the industry as a whole and thus ruins the whole point of it. Why exactly did the Western gaming community start to get this weird fear of Japan? And then of course the double standards pop up; GTA V gets a free pass for its blatant, unashamed misogyny while Dragon's Crown gets railed on for its intentionally exaggerated character design. The God of War series can be described as "I have issues with women" but goes gleefully ignored while Bayonetta is considered icky for having a female lead who embraces her sexuality. Sounds to me like the West needs to get over its awkward puberty phase because that's what I'm reminded of: an idiot teenager

But Ace Attorney is in America...  ;)

I think Japanese games will still be here but they are only niche titles(with a few exceptions like Resident Evil) compared to yearly games like Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, Madden, and FIFA.

LEAVE POLYGON ALONE!!! they arent racists, they are way to stupid to understand racism...
they get scared by things they dont know, and they hate to get scared, so the hate everything thats different.

Japanese games are more imaginative, that makes most Americans uncomfortable. It's actually quite sad and reflects a small, petty mind - one that is baffled and unsettled by the new and the bizarre, rather than compelled or filled with awe. The American mindset is rigid and joyless, marked by a reliance upon realism and conformity.

So, KotakuInAction is still in action, I see.
