Forums - Sales Discussion - UK Charts Week Ending 27 December 2014

Nice to see the continuing good sales of LBP3 and DriveClub.

Interesting that ACU XB1 drops while ACU PS4 rises despite the bundle and price promotions.

Yep XB1 doing super well too. Was always going to do well here in the UK.

Yeah, and to think the narrative before these two consoles launched was 'consoles are dead'.

nobody said that

but consoles this gen will sell tens of millions less than last gen, worldwide combined. you disagree?

Oh, do you have sales data or official word for the past 7 weeks in the UK?

Nintendo are doing worse than last gen but both Sony and MS are doing better. I don't see a reduction in console sales (at the moment), all I see is a shift in market share.

There is almost no chance that PS4 + xb one pick up the slack left by Wii U falling so far short of Wii. And xb one tracking ahead of 360 at present means nothing long term. PS4 and Xb one are splitting a market of around 150-160 million. The vast majority of Wii owners have moved on and won't be buying a console this gen. The question is whether they can be tempted back next gen.

PS360 have sold a combined ~170m by now and still are selling. To think absolutely nobody will go from Wii to PS4 or XB1 is just silly, especially since Sony already confirmed many of the PS4 buyers didn't have PS4 but did have Wii or 360.

Incredible.

So break it down for me....

You have 270m colsoles to divide up between the PS4, Xbox One and WiiU

Go!

I just think it's far too early to call, that's all. Are you always this aggressive?

He's right though. Even if the PS4 and X1 sell 100M each, can you see the Wii U selling 70M.

And this is using the optimistic numbers for the X1 and PS4.

Very optimistic for XB1, very pessimistic for PS4. 100m will be way too easy for PS4.

Game (the biggest games retailer as you should know) have had Drive Club in the majority of their bundles. Just look at the main page now. I'm not hating on Drive Club, looks like a great game and will pick up when I get a PS4 but to think that it's at number 7 because of "weather updates" and word of mouth is stretching it.

"A price cut for PS4 exclusive ‘Driveclub’ (+24%) propels the title back into the Top 10 at No7. "

That's the game itself that boosted DriveClub up the charts. The bundle seems like it was more constant week on week. Without it, "weather updates" and them generally fixing the game it would be considerably lower. It's not purely selling in bundles. That's like saying ACU XB1 is only selling due to bundles, which could be possible if we didn't see the PS4 version right next to it...

Personally I predicted a 70 million contraction this gen when the consoles were launching. Even that feels a bit optimistic as I expected the Wii U to perform better than it has.  The X1 and PS4 are holding up their end of my expectations thus far, if I had to put hard numbers down now?

PS4 - 100-110 million

X1 - 50-60 million

Wii U - 20-25 million

Total - 170-195 million

Much of this is dependent on how long this generation goes. Are we in for another 6-8 year generation or a return to 5-6 generation?

I think the PS4 could actually be the PS5. That's why I don't want to call it just yet.

The PS5 Exists.

Not sure. I think console sales will be more frount ended this gen. We might see quicker market satuation but numbers reached quicker. This is why we saw record breaking numbers at launch followed by abysmal sales for the X1. PS4 has held superb momentum but I have a feeling we could see a Wii style sales drop off when it starts to die off. 100M is possible though, but not sure it will be much over.

And PS4 domination continues in UK.

is it just a round of jokes for you today...?

it may have sneaked this week after a 7 week losing streak I think you meant to say.

great post. i love it when you talk about facts based on your own assumptions.

Is it safe to say many ex Wii gamers are going for the PS4 over the Xbox one?
