But it is absolutely dying. Look at the abysmal attach rates.

CS:GO's rise has just been crazy.  Is it more popular than 1.6 and Source at their peaks now?

Arma 3 not surprising. It is older than those two and has been on sale more times. Only people that say PC gaming is dying are the PC gamers. Like I would say "Novebody uses internet" because everybody said so in 1999 and I think everybody still says it. Get over it, PC gamers. You are the only people keeping that statement alive.

Let's not forget that Steam automatically signs you in.

Is that 8 million people playing any game at once? Or just 8 million logged into Steam but mightn't be playing? Impressive either way but I am always logged into Steam but rarely play.

logged-in but if you count just the top 100 most played games and their current players count you see that there are still millions in-game at the same time and who knows how many who play per day. Considering that many of the most played PC games aren't even on Steam and that many who play games which are on Steam don't play the Steam version (but still a bought version) I think we see that PC gaming does pretty well.

I wonder how much Valve makes with CS:GO. It's as if every second guy you meet has some expensive weapon skins (which are seldom so that many cases have to be opened) and if you look at how many weapon cases and skins are sold on the marketplace (not only does valve get money for every transaction but they also sell every key for 2 bucks to open an insane amount of cases per day) it has to be crazy for a game which is not f2p.

I wonder if such a system would also work on consoles.
