Forums - Politics Discussion - Do you think the FDA has too much power?

Think argument reminds me of those Facebook posts I used to see that state how back in the 80s kids were called daydreamers when they didn't pay attention in class. Or how if a kid didn't play with others on the playground he was just deemed a "loner" and not Autistic. But today we have a medical diagnosis for all of these things and a reason to poor kids on pills. And while there is some truth to this notion there's also the fact that we'd not discovered these illnesses yet and many who needed help didn't get it.

To the point though, have you ever stopped to think that maybe all these fake miracle pills aren't around anymore because of the existence of the FDA? I hate to sound like a government schill but do you think people wouldn't push this crap if there were no agencies to police them? I often find that Americans will complain about things like these and call them "oppression". I guess that because I'm from another country that's had its issues with things like these I can appreciate the FDA to a point.

I think that certain things that people would want to do away with in this country are absolutely necessary to have in place. Why would anyone want to do away with the EPA? Because people no longer dump toxic waste in residential neighborhoods? Do you think that's because they've become good people or do you think it's because the EPA watches them? Or how about people (Rand Paul) who'd want to do away with the Civil Rights Act? Because people should have a right to open a public business but keep people out who are of a different race, sex, or creed. THAT'S BULLSH!T!!! And I'm no big fan of government oversight but I'm a realist who realizes that people usually will go as far as they're allowed to go. And yes, I'm ready for any comments about how I'm some government puppet.

As a non American person, i like fda more then most european equivalent istitutions.

You have no idea how painful the approval of new drugs is here. A lot of papers, and a bunch of stupid old people with power are always in the way with cobservative thinking and incompetence.

As I've stated in a previous post, it seems that people who've lived in other countries under far more lenient governments can appreciate some of this government "overreach". Americans  complain about things such as high gas prices (even though it's far less here than anywhere else in the world).

This is one of the major problems with American government and lobbyists. Pharmaceutical companies donate stupid amounts of money to politicians they KNOW will keep certain laws open.

Visit the doctor once, get your disease cured?
Or
Visit the doctor often for a prescription which doesn't cure but numbs the symptoms to have returning customers.

This is how our market in America is set up and this is how our government is ran.

No, the FDA is absolutely necessary. It may need to adapt in the coming years as the push towards genomics and personalised medicine starts to take off, but if anything they need more power. They're an essential part of the drug approval process.

Honestly I don't care. Markets will find their way. The FDA will do its thing on the surface and you'll have black markets for the medication people need. Government is only force, and like with any other type of force, it can be avoided.

I think the days of radium and other potentially missleading medical miracle pills are gone.

We are struggling to deal with cancer, autism, aids, ebola, and anything else you can think of.

In fact, I believe the rest of the word has less strict guidelines on most medical related issues and it shows. America is behnd...

What are your thoughts on FDA?

I disagree, they have grown immensely in past 20-30 years

The problem with the FDA is that it doesn't have enough power, and so is easily manipulated by money. Its also inefficient.

I'm interested. What are some powers the FDA doesn't have that you guys think it should have in order to make it more efficient? Honestly, it seems to have as much power as it possibly can have at this point. But please go on.

When it comes to food production, the FDA inspectors are plant employees who are financially liable for any lost revenue that results from incorrectly-requiested line stoppages. Usually, the inspector is a minimum wage employee, to whom the FDA sends a "congratulations, inspector" letter. Why does such lunacy exist? Lobbyists is the answer. the FDA review and approval process can be expedited via certain paths, depending upon the safety risks or life-saving capabilities of a drug or device. Unfortunately, the FDA reapplies the same statistical analyses to virtually every report. Couple that with it being a massively underfunded agency (Only about 20 of their 200 some odd scheduled inspections were actually performed in 2014.), you can see how their effectiveness is hampered.

For perspective, the EU CE approval process is a comparative breeze, but the US effectively ignores products with CE marks.
