Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Marvel Vs. Capcom series is 20 years old!

Yesterday, 20 years ago, we were introduced to the beginning of the Marvel Vs. Capcom series.  The first game, X-Men: Children of the Atom, introduced us, to the characters who would remain the strongest characters in the series.  Wolverine, Magneto, Storm, and Sentinel...  And, Cyclops too, I suppose.

I wanted to make awareness of this for two reasons:

One, Marvel Vs. Capcom, the 5th game in the series, is being removed from Xbox Live and PSN tomorrow.  Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 was already removed last year, so if you missed it, it's too late.  The clock is ticking for marvel vs. capcom.

Here are links to the games on PSN and Xbox Live.

Also, there's an amazing combo video put out.  Just when I thought I saw everything, I keep learning that there is always more.  That's why the series lasted as long as it did.  There is no Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 included in this video.  Quite frankly, that was hands down one of the worst fighting games I've ever played.  Even worse than Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter, so although it would have been nice, to have all the games, it's not really needed anyway.

I even liked Street Fighter IV more than Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, and I've never been much of a Street Fighter fan.

Why is it so difficult to embed a simple video?

Was just playing MvC 2 a few days ago. Still a great game. Hard to believe it's been so long.

I played it last week too...  After not playing it for ages.  I'm now playing the first game.  I cannot transition between the two, as for the most part, I generally stick to the same characters.  I'm stuck between using Blackheart and Ruby Heart, who are my best characters, but because I don't use default controls in Marvel 2, it's really difficult adjusting for megaman, who is my best character in the first game.

He's arguably better in Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, despite his many nerfs. He can't charge while grabbing, he cannot link beat plane, or rush drill without a designated assist, like Ironman's repulsor blast, his leaf sheild hits way too fast,  tornado hold is much shorter than MvC1.

Someone argued that he was still somehow better, because a good megaman can take out magneto.  Which is true, Megaman in MvC2 was always my magneto counter, but those nerfs really did hold him back.

Now that I'm playing a lot more Marvel Vs. Capcom Origins, Megaman and Red Venom/Hulk is the team for me.  I even win with Megaman and Roll more times than I should.  I love catching people off guard with a Megaman and Roll team.  They never expect the beating that insues.  The only thing that really gives me trouble are the people that tech grabs regularly.  Really throws a bone at my plans, as I use the grabs as mid-air combo-resets to reset damage scaling.  Can get 75% damage on most characters with one combo.

Honestly didn't play any of the other games very much.  Too bad Capcom couldn't release the games with "X-Men" in the title due to copyright, or MvC: Origins would have had the complete CPS2 versions of the series.  Topped off with MvC2, and 3, you would have had the entire series on one console.  Oh well.. Maybe in another 10 years we can have that.

I recommend people get Marvel Vs. Capcom Origins before the time is up.  You wont have the option later.

EDIT:  Didn't there use to be a gallery in the game's section here on VG charts.  I kinda added those pictures to MvC1 with the crazy combos, and what not, coming from Hulk, Megaman, and Red Venom.  I don't know how to find that anymore.

Fuck, I'm old.

MvC1 was the best in the series. It just got way too flashy and crazy afterwards. Still love the series.
