One thing I notice time and again--games that try to be realistic almost always look dated after a couple of years. Games that are more stylized always seem to age better. Some games are good for their time. Other games are timeless.

Agreed. Why I always felt SNES games aged so much better than PS1 did.

Recently played Child of Light, Valiant Hearts and Transistor, and all three did a great job with art design.

I would say of last generation Journey was title that art direction and music really left me in awe.

Super Metroid especially and quite a few of the SNES and Genesis (and PS1) library I think look quite great today. The amount of detail in the sprite work is incredible. MGS V and Bloodborne I both think look so good. Valve games also hold up great, I still can't believe that Half Life 2 was released in 2004.

God of War III is still unbelievably beautiful.

The fifth generation in general has aged like bread since it stood as the transition from 2D to 3D gaming.

Maybe Pikmin 3. I love plants and miniature stuff, and the character models are incredible. I just hope we get a Pikmin 4 where the dated Wii assets have been fully replaced.

I also really like how Twilight Princess looks. That gloomy, realistic look is awesome.

Currently playing:

Bloodbath Paddy Wagon Ultra 9

Prince of Persia (2008) was a watercolored orgasm to my eyes.

Currently own:

  • Ps4

Currently playing: Witcher 3, Walking Dead S1/2, GTA5, Dying Light, Tomb Raider Remaster, MGS Ground Zeros

Child of Light it's like fanservice for me, since it reminds me of impressionism and romanticism. This is the best looking game for me.

This year we also saw tremendously beautiful games such as Assassin's Creed Unity, Mario Kart 8,

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Heard it was such a beast it killed a couple phat ps3s.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

Okami was very, very neat. Same goes for Wind Waker, most notably the HD version.
Darksiders was very attractive as well, especially the 2nd one. That game's art direction was truly incredible.

Also, Link's Awakening. Its graphics are pretty much perfection for what it is, imho.

I'd also mention the overall graphics style of the 3D Mario games since Galaxy 1 through 3D World has been extremely pleasing and fitting.
