Forums - Gaming Discussion - What innovations do you want in games?

I see people comparing everywhere on this site and many others that games are not innovative. For some if a new IP is not innovative its considered to be a con for the game. Everyone wants new IP's, just for some innovation. So what exactly are the innovations you want? There are surely many possibilities, so I'd like to know exactly what you want in any number of genres.

People want next gen gameplay but nobody seems to know what that is. In fact, some people seem to get pissed of when a certain game doesn't fit the "next gen" definition that others are looking for.

I'm gonna jump from tablet to pc and edit this post.

I want SAO, that's a long ways off so I don't expect much in terms of innovation in video games

I don't know if it can be called an innovation, but I'd like more developers to focus on the mechanics and rules of their games first, and consider the graphics and storyline as secondary and tertiary priorities, respectively.

Meaningful innovation is extremely rare and becomes even more rare as a medium grows older. It's not something we can expect to happen regularly or often. Even when innovation occurs, just because a game has innovative qualities does not mean that it's a good game or that the innovation has any real positive impact on the medium at large. In most instances, improvements to well-established formulas result in superior experiences when compared to raw innovation.

It's really not something that concerns me overmuch. When it happens, it happens, and then I'll think about its relevance.

Now, that being said, If I could name something I want to see, it would be an RPG where you could finely tailor the battle-system and tweak it on the fly. Also, since so many FPS games seem to want to include platforming, I'd consider it incredibly innovative if someone could find a way to make it not lame.

I dont care about innovation as long as the gameplay is good or the game has an interresting storyline or the artstyle is good.

Gamers are like women -- they want you to be spontaneous, but not when they're not expecting it.

I don't necessarily want innovation; I want good games. The clamoring for new IPs is overblown as people focus on yearly series such as Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed. While ignoring series that come about once or twice a generation like Metal Gear and Grand Theft Auto.

Games need these following innovations especially in console games.
Rock solid stable frame rate.
Good optimization.
Forget resolution. Make the game bug free.

XD This is such a great quote!

To answer the question (assuming innovation means a new mechanic/gameplay feature never seen in a videogame), I don't want forced innovation for the sake of it. I would rather have an excellent polished game with little surprises than a half-finished game with "innovation." Granted, both would be better but a lot of great ideas have already been made and it can be really hard to make something that is both innovative but also awesome.
