This reminds me of another hypothetical situation/story.

A man is approached by a mysterious hooded man who offers him 50 million dollars cash. The catch is that once he accepts the money someone on Earth is going to die. The hooded man assures the other that the person that will die is not related to him, has never met him or even met anyone he's ever met.

The man is really strapped for cash and asks for a day to think about it. After a day of hard thinking, he finally caves in and agrees to the deal. The hooded man gives the money as promised and just before leaving he says: "You might be interested to know that tomorrow, I'm going to make the same offer to a man in need, a man who has never met you or anyone you know..."

I remember that.  It was an awesome episode of the Twilight Zone!  Then, it was remade into a horrible movie.
