Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Truth About: 30 FPS vs 60 FPS

What is your prefered number of FPS?

< 30: I grew up with B... 17 5.63%

30 FPS: Any higher looks... 53 17.55%

45 FPS: I like a good balance :) 32 10.60%

60 FPS: Any lower is VERY noticable to me! 168 55.63%

90+ FPS: Because im a robot bish. 32 10.60%

Total:302

For ages now, gamers have been arguing about the perfect number Frames Per Second (FPS) in video games - is 30 FPS or 60 FPS the best?

Conventional knowledge states that 60 FPS is TWICE as good as 30FPS for obvious reasons...There are more frames of animation, therefore everything should move more smoothly and, "Realistically".

However, many others claim that 30 FPS looks exactly the same to them as 60 FPS - so why should devs waste valuable processing power to needlessly double the flashing of a screen?

Well I propose a theory that explains the vast discrepancy in opinions on this matter.

Your Ears

Yup, you read that right!  Ironically, the most important factor that decides whether you prefer 30 or 60 Frames Per Second...might just be your Temporal Lobe and/or your Ear Drums.  Honestly, im surprised this hasnt been thought of before now.

It has long been known that the instinctive unconcious genius of the animal brain will always keep a balance with its senses.  For instance, if one of or both of your eyes becomes damaged and your Visual Cortex is no longer being used to its full capacity - your brain will gradually begin to intergrate the now unused portions of your Visual Cortext for other sensory tasks, such as processing sound - to make up for the visual inefficiencies.

This is all stuff I am sure you have heard before, and you can probably see where I am going with this.

keeping a long story and theory short...

If you prefer the look and feel of 60 FPS games, chances are you do not have the best hearing.  Thats not to say you are deaf by any means!  It might simply mean that you do not have hearing capabilities to make full use of the parts your Cerebral Cortext responsible for processing sound.  In either case, your brain is using the unused portions of your Cerebral Cortex to aid the Visual Cortex.

And the opposite can be said for people with spectacular hearing.  They may prefer the look and feel of 30 FPS.

It is also worth noting that the Human Eye does not see in, "Frames"...what we see when we open our eyes is a constant unending stream of visual light information - it is how well our brains can sort through that information that matters.

So people with slightly worse hearing capabilities, are able to process more visual information, which is why 60 FPS feels more comfortable to them.

I could go on and on about this subject (like how people that like 60 FPS are more common in todays world because of headphone damage and whatever)  but I would like to hear your thoughts!

I disagree with that. I have above-average hearing sensitivity, yet I MUCH prefer 60fps over 30 fps.

Besides, (speaking for framerate alone) there's no downside to 60fps over 30fps, as much as Ubisoft would like to claim.

I don't think this theory applies to all cases of 60 vs 30. Sometimes it's just that much noticeable for some games while others it may not be.

Just when you think the 30fps apologists can't get weirder...

Fair enough, you could just have a stronger visual cortex than the average person.

You could also have a defficiency in another sense as well (Touch, Smell, Taste)

I prefer 60 FPS ;)

What if you're deaf in one ear? 45fps?

I'm pretty sure you aren't being serious but just to humour you I don't like your theory because you assume that bad hearing is due to disuse of the auditory processing areas of your cortex rather than the far more common and frequent causes which are largely conductive rather than sensorineural (neurological) in nature, including the headphones example you gave.

30 FPS with properly implemented motion blur is optimal variant, really. If you need 60 FPS that much there is no point to waste hardware resources on it, modern TVs can interpolate you 60 FPS out of Ocarina of Time running on N64.

Actually I indicated that damage to the auditory system, including physical wounds to your ears/ear drums, can cause the auditory parts of your brain to not function within normal parameters.

So basically physical wounds become mental ineffiencies
