No it didn't really do much, it appears like it did but the fact that it released in a time that had a drought last year made the YoY boost seem bigger than it really was. If Wii U had a somewhat major game+bundle release in May/June 2013 then we would have likely seen a modest YoY boost like we have seen the rest of the year.

In the US Wii U is up YoY by about 270k thru November while Japan is down about 100k YoY in the same time frame. If VGC numbers are correct then Europe is up by a similar amount as the US. Worldwide Wii U is up by about 500k YoY in the first 11 months, percentage wise that's pretty decent but in terms of actual numbers that's not really huge considering this year had Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, Smash Bros, Captain Toad.

I'm not comparing it  with 2013 tough, I'm comparing with months before game release. Vgchartz numbers:

05th Apr - 32k
12th Apr - 28k
10th Apri - 30k
26th Apr - 28k
03rd May - 28k
10th May - 28k
17th May - 27k
24th May - 29k
Two months average (before game release): ~29k
31st May - 131k (+345%)
07th Jun - 95k
14th Jun - 72k
21st Jun - 62k
28th Jun - 61k
05th Jul - 61k
12th Jul - 58k
19th Jul - 56k
26th Jul - 56k
Two months average (after game release): ~ 81k

It did much for the system at least as far as a game can do.  After MK8, Wii U was able to hold up against XOne for three months (winning in some weeks!). I think that was an achievement.

it all depends on Nintendo's game pacing in 2015. So far in 2013 and 2014,everytime they've gotten momentum, they've killed it by having game droughts and delays.

If they can keep a good steady pace of games coming throughout the year, then 2015 will be Wii U's peak year by far

That trail of thought makes no sense to me.

How does the frequency in which these games release affect their system selling ability? If someone wants to buy a Wii U for any of the games that come out next year then they'll buy the system for that game when the game releases. Why would anyone not buy a Wii U for, let's say, Kirby when he wants one for Kirby, just because the game releases with no immediate other game releasing close to it.

If all the announced 2015 games from Nintendo release in 2015 then all the people that want to buy a Wii U for any of those games should be buying one no matter if all the games release in Oct-Dec or if they put one out every month.

Because most people buy consoles for more than one game.

....Uh, ok? And how does that relate in any way to what I'm saying?

People feel more comfortable buying a system that has a consistent number of releases. If somebody sees droughts, then they get the impression that there are periods in which games aren't releasing for the console. People think on the margin (an economic principle), not throughout a whole year in hindsight. Let's say I want 4 games on Wii U. If one releases every 3 months, then I have an impression of a healthier console. Now let's say that all four games releases October-November. For three fourths of the year I get the impression the Wii U has no games I want, and it is only during the holiday schedule that I'd be content, almost overly so because I don't have time for x amount of games in a short period of time. It's one of the reasons why I don't purchase a Vita despite there being a few games I'm interested in. I am not certain of its future.

not 6 million.
But 5 million in 2015, but only if a price drop.

If there is no price drop, i think that it will sell the same as 2014.

It's not happening. The Wii U not selling seems to be a fact as inevitable as death. It wouldn't matter if they reduced the price to $9.99 and gave 10 free games away with it, people would still turn their nose up.

Hard to believe when the 2 best system sellers are already out and didn't do much for the system. If I were you, I would have lower my expectations.

Are you saying that MK8 didn't do much for the system?!

Since Wii U is still behind the gamecube in the same time frame, then yes, it didn't do much for the system.  That's without mentioning how badly Wii U perform on black friday, way behind gamecube.  Doubling the install base doesn't tell much if at the end Wii U doesn't outsell gamecube.

If it does then it will easily outsell the cube by close to 10 million by the end.

Wii U is currently ~5 million behind launch aligned.  Why do you think it will easily outsell it in the end?

Xbox one is quite above its predecessor, will it outsell it?No,it will sell half or a little more!

Gamecube had two consecutive price cuts of 50$ and 50$ respectively,in its two first years and sold really fast, this maybe the reason of the difference!

I remember Gamecube outselling xbox with difference and not being quite away ps2,after the price cuts...:P

I disagree.  =)

MK8 more than doubled the base line of sales for Wii U for almost two months. To see a game's effect on a system you should compare the sales of the same console before and after that game. It doesn't make any sense saying a game didn't do much for a console just because this console isn't selling better than other (on another time!).

I tought we were discuting MK8 effect on Wii U sales and that has nothing to do with GameCube.

I'm well aware the effect MK8 had on Wii U but my comments wasn't regarded to how much MK8 push Wii U, it was related to how far behind Wii U is compare to gamecube considering the 2 best selling games is already out.  I don't know about you but this thread is practically Wii U vs. gamecube, that's why I disagree with the OP.  It's becoming apparent that Wii U will have a tough time reaching gamecube level as time pass.  There's still some price cut to play on but Nintendo is taking to much time  implementing those price cut.

$199 Smash Bros. + NintenLand Bundle early next year is the only way I could see that happening, meaning it's not gonna happen. The only guaranteed system seller for 2015 is Zelda, and it's not even as big as Smash Bros. or Mario Kart. Yeah there will likely be a price cut but unless it's cut by $100 then I don't see a significant change in trajectory. Nintendo is definitely trying to maximize profit now that marketshare is a lost cause, so I wouldn't be suprised if they don't price cut til 2016.

Oh OK, got it.
